WICHITA, Kan. – The Friends University Falcons took the opening game of a three-game set 6-3 today (Feb. 28) over the Kansas Wesleyan University Coyotes at Westside Athletic Field. The Falcons have now reeled off seven straight victories and are 12-8 overall and 2-0 in the KCAC.
Gabriel Corona (SR/Fresno, Calif. ) wasted no time putting the Falcons on top, belting a two-run homer in the bottom of the first that made it 2-0.
The Coyotes (8-6, 0-1 KCAC) would cut the deficit in half when Dalton Bishop led off the second with a triple and promptly scored on a single by Trey Lopez in the second.
In the bottom of the third, the Falcons got the run back on an RBI single by Troy Puga (SR/Pueblo, Colo.) that plated Ricardo Paris (SR/Barquisimeto, Valenzuela).
After an RBI double by Timothy Storms and a run-scoring single from Brant Howell tied the score in the fourth, the Falcons regained the lead in the bottom of the frame when Wes Kuzminsky (JR/Salkum, Wash. ) scored on a passed ball.
Isiah Perez (JR/Larned, Kan. ) then delivered the Falcons valuable insurance tallies with a pinch-hit two-run single in the bottom of the sixth that plated Kuzminsky and Ricky Hockett (JR/Plainville, Kan. ).
Austin Eggleston (SR/Arlington, Texas) came on in the eighth inning and closed out the victory with a scoreless eighth and ninth inning with three strikeouts to pick up his third save of the season.
Zach Demchenko (SR/Okotoks, Alberta) started and went six innings for the Falcons, allowing three runs while striking out five to get the win.
Jacob Coogan (SO/Broomfield, Colo.) followed Demchenko with a runner on in the seventh and kept the Coyotes off the board.
Puga continued his hot-hitting with a 2-of-3 effort at the plate.
The Falcons and Coyotes will wrap up the three-game series with a twinbill tomorrow (Feb. 29) starting at noon.
