How do you become an umpire? Are there classes you have to take? Certification required? Dues to pay?

Our local rec organization is looking for adult umpires this spring and summer and im looking for some extra dollars to fund my DD's travel expenses. Any advice/direction or info would be appreciated. Thanks!

It works out good for me umpiring rec league to pay for travel ball. I usually put all my money away and only take it out to pay for trips. The summer league I umpire in wants someone with a high school licence. The above link takes you to OHSAA'w website for info about becoming an official in any sport. There is a spot link on that page that takes you to finding an instructor in your area.

H&G nice way to pick up some extra $$$.. DD went through knothole sanctioning classes and she can do a lot of the local rec. leagues in our area. Michelle Fletcher can get you hooked up for ASA classes and check out one of the USSSA parks for their info... Mostly it is reading the rule book, updates and changes / clarifications and taking a pretty simple written test...

DD did not need a background check but, I think over 18 you may need one... We did for the Catholic leagues...

Awesome! I already went through the background check and fingerprinting process to coach basketball a few years ago. I'll reach out to Michelle and contact Expressway.
Jacksaw, thanks for the link! Can't wait to get started.

Some of the high school umpiring classes may have already begun (I know that the ones for the central district are already in about their third week). Any of the instructors on the OHSAA website should be able to fill you in on details for getting registered in your area.

This special class is a unique umpiring opportunity for new umpires to become certified for both OHSAA softball and ASA softball in one weekend. At this point of year, it might be your best bet.

Yes, there is a cost involved to take the class. But the cost includes all instructional materials, rule books, case books, umpire manuals, plus your annual OHSAA and ASA dues (which you would have to pay anyway to become certified with them). Minus all those expenses, you are really paying about $40 to take the class.

One note to anyone looking to "strike it rich" in their first year of umpiring: Baseball and softball are probably the two most expensive sports to get into. A decent set of protective equipment (mask, chest protector, shin guards, etc.) and all of the required uniforms (hats, shirts, pants, shoes) might set you back at least $400.

If you can average, say, a $35 game fee per game, it is only going to take you about 12 games to "break even". After that...it's all profit!

The money can be a nice incentive to give up some of your free time and family time to officiate a sport. If you can put up with the initial expense, the travel, the arguments from coaches and the derision from fans, then you may enjoy having "the best seat in the house" to watch a softball game.

What I'm saying is...if you go into umpiring looking for the big bucks, you might be disappointed. But if you're there because you love the game...you might not be!

We are in WPA. The AD here is worried that we only have 7 umpires on the list to do both softball and baseball and they have an average age of 70+. He might have to rescheduled games due an umpire shortage. If you have the ability to work afternoons check out the high school level of the umpire's association. They might be looking for a few healthy umpires. (Knowing the rules and having experience is a bonus)

Not in it for the big bucks at all...but I could start out with 3 games a week locally in April at 35 a game. Thanks for the info! Can't wait to pursue this!

That's not true! However you get no calls if you're wearing a St. X or Elder shirt. :D
