Okay today at tryouts, today is the first day most of these girls have hit vs live girl pitch. All of them have moved up to 10u this year. The pitcher, who had already tried out as a pitcher, was pitching live to these girls. Shouldn't she have just been throwing fastballs? Come on the first time these girls have hit live girl pitch (40+mph), and then she is throwing changeups. Come on really. Her brother that was sitting in the bleachers was even giving her signs and loving it. Not only was this not right for the batters it wasn't right for the catcher who had also not seen live girl pitch and had no idea what was coming. It probably would have been okay if she could throw strikes, she was throwing strikes during her pitching tryout. You have to be Able to throw strikes with your fastball to batters before you work on a changeup, right?

Okay I'm done.

I know aren't tryouts crazy?? I have seen slow front toss, fast front toss, pitching machines. Try hitting, some want them to slap, some don't even ask them to bunt! My wish would be 10 swings off the tee, followed by 10 yellow weighted balls tossed slow, then a few fast balls pitched by a coach. Some of the time the players don't even have practice swings. Then the girl pitchers, pitching. Drives me crazy for 10u. All I can say with tryouts is, be ready for anything! Good luck!

Sounds like it was pretty rough for the girls and letting a girl throw junk to first year kids is not right I think. I mean you want to see what you have to work with and I say (work with) not what pitches can you hit your first time seeing a kid pitch to you. I am sure that the coach was not changing speeds and location in coach pitch it's pitch to the swing in most cases.

Perhaps you should have asked the coaches their thoughts on this during tryouts .
My daughter , whom you are referring to, was pitching to these batters , per request of the coaches. Their goal was to see what level the pitchers , catchers and batters are at.
My daughter just turned 9, and has a long way to go to be a top level pitcher . If you haven't seen any A level tournaments /teams, you might be surprised to know that these 9& 10u girls are throwing "junk" left and right. My son wasn't calling locations , which he could have, he was calling pitches , as requested. It was at the coaches request !
Obviously the girls are ALL new to kid pitch . BP and tryouts are the best practice for these young players. Most parents and coaches are interested in learning where they need to focus with their girls . This isn't coach pitch , and everyone has to adjust to every aspect and difference between the two.
She hasn't been taught to "throw hard" ( as you told your daughter), she's been trained to PITCH.
She does throw hard(45 mph) for a 9 year old . This was a TRYOUT , right ?

Like I told the coach, I had no problem with her pitching to the girls, the problem I had was this was the first time most of these girls have ever hit vs live pitching. Your daughter had already had her tryout to pitch, now it was time to just throw strikes for the girls to try to hit. I know girls will throw junk next year, I expect them to, but she was pitching for the girls to hit not try to strike them out!!! The coach never told your son to call pitches, I was right there, you are now lying.

Do you think it was fair to the catcher? Shouldn't the catcher know what is coming or is she supposed to guess too?

You have no idea about my daughter, I never told her to throw hard, again why are you lying? My daughter has been pitching for like 1 week, 1 week! Here is what I tell my daughter now, slow back, long stride, punch it out, big windmill.

Sure it was a tryout, she had her tryout to pitch, then it was time to throw strikes for the girls to hit, nothing more nothing less.

On a side note...

I'm glad to see what types of things you are saying to her. I remember now, we used to focus on the same few things, for a few weeks at a time. IE- long stride, big arm etc. Then move onto other things like whip, staying tall, being explosive. But, unfortunately we still revisit old habits from time to time, like anything else. Nothing is a quick fix. It's nice to see things are still clicking along. Good Luck!

Sir, we have known Mrs. Horsley for many years . She did ask my son to call her pitches , not just strikes. I don't believe that you were right by our side all day. I have no reason to lie about something so trivial. This is travel ball, it's what coaches expect to see from girls this age . It isn't a bad thing. She wanted to see if her top hitters could hit what was thrown to them. So, it was not just about "throwing strikes."
That being said, we haven't decide if we will accept her offer for our daughter, but you're making it a little easier for us. Unnecessary drama, and the team hasn't even been signed yet.

I can see throwing different pitches to 2nd year 10u but to kids coming out of coach pitch seeing live pitching from a kid for the first time I think you would want to just see how they do hitting fastballs.

Right over here!
Not the best way to start a new season... 10U is really about change ups and fastballs. There are some drops and screws but they are rare. If a kid can hit 50+ then adjust to a 27MPH change thats a great 10U batter. I think some kids, even at 8 and 9, naturally have that ability. Not talking a side either way but I can see why you would want to move the pitches around. Also, as a coach you should be evaluating where the kids will go rather than where they are today. There was some method to the madness, just not sure what it was. You have to look at a try out as a window into the game acumen of the coaches and what they are doing. Don't take it to heart...
