Breaking the rules

My daughter was playing against a team last weekend at Expressway who was using an illegal player. I am fairly new to fastpitch softball, does this happen often??

It happens in every sport at every level of competition. See the dubious birth certificates of the Chinese gymnasts at the last Olympics as an example. Some people will do anything to win.

12-under age bracket, 14 under player. Everyone new about it. Coach actually told player to go by another name.....

Are you questioning the action because she was illegal, or because she was a "ringer"?

Sometimes, situations arise where a team is short of players on a particular weekend, so they throw an illegal on the field just so they don't forfeit. But if the unauthorized player is suddenly the best on the team, everybody, justifiably, screams.

Regardless of the reason, yes, it's illegal - but, the grey area is : did the player have an impact on the outcome of the game?

I question it because it crossing the line in terms of integrity of the game. Also what does it teach the girls on this particular team about "playing by the rules. Louuuuuu you are wrong saying...

" Sometimes, situations arise where a team is short of players on a particular weekend so they don't forfeit"

You respect the game no matter what! A coach should ALWAYS be respecting the game...

Sure there were 12U girls out there they could have picked up instead of playing someone who legally couldn't play that age division....

Was the situation corrected, or is it something teams in SW Ohio need to be on the lookout for from this - so far - un-named team.

kaner,

I have to agree with you. I cant think of any situation that would make me want to use an illegal player. We, as coaches and fans, need to have honor and integrity as we respect the game.

With that said, if the opposing coaches did not say anything about it, then there is a significant issue there as well. We, as coaches, need to hold each other accountable for breaking the rules as well.

If it was a scrimmage or league type game, yes it is common. I would rather my opponent pick up a 14U player than not have enough to play. For a tournament, not at all acceptable.

Yea, if you can justify breaking the rules so you don't have to forfeit then you can justify breaking any rule for any reason. Adults breaking the rules in a KIDS game is disgusting and an adult getting a KID on your team to break the rules and LIE is disturbing. Adding a 14u to play a scrimmage happens but it is done with both knowing and agreeing.

The team was the 12-under *********************. They beat my dd's team in the semi-finals, but we came back and beat them 2x in the finals to win!!

Justice prevailed...Good Job. They weren't called out at the tourney?

If a team suspects that another team is using an illegal player, a non-rostered player or playing a kid under an assumed name, this can be protested anytime during the tournament.

The Tournament Director will need to sort this out for you. But first he has to be made aware of it. If your team's coach had a concern about this, he should have made his concern known to, for starters, the umpire if it happened during a game, and then the Tournament Director so that he can decide on any any penalties, sanctions or forfeits.

depending on the sanctioning body both the girl and the coach can be suspended for one year.

In every part of the state there are 12U eligible players playing up on 14U teams. I have a 16U eligible player playing up on my 18U team. In either case these players could play down at the lower age level in tourneys if they choose. You have given no proof to the contrary, and is therefore mere speculation on your part.

Unless you have seen the birth certificate and/or personally know the player involved I would not come on here as a new member and spout off about a team using an ineligible player without giving proof. Just my 2 cents worth.

At 18 and Under my team was playing, had plenty of players, but one of the younger siblings was there (14 year old) who played in the same organization. She cheered us all weekend, and then on Sunday we had one girl who didn't show up, and our coach asked the girl if she wanted to warm up and be on the bench with us. He put her on the lineup card as the girl who didn't show up since she wasn't on the tournament roster. He told her he would get her in if possible, (again we didn't need her, and all the parents were fine with it because we were beating up on all the teams). She went in as a pinch runner, and then played the last inning as a second baseman. We went along with it and called her by the wrong name and everything. I don't really see anything wrong with this situation.
