Can you play up if rostered on another team?

If a girl is rostered on one team at 10u, can she substitute for another team at 12u who has an injury? Note that she will not be playing for both teams in the same tournament weekend. Need answer for both ASA, and NSA.

From the NSA side, she would have to be released from her 10U team and added to the 12U roster. The catch? She can not go back to the team that released her for the remainder of the season. She can go back to 10U just not her original team until the next season starts.

I suggest you call the local sanctioning body to verify.

I have often had exceptions made for players. There can be exceptions to the rules. Also, unless the player or team plan on going to a sanctioned World Series the whole roster issue really is not a big deal. I know for USSSA my daughters have been on multiple rosters most years.

Now this year, we are playing in a USSSA WS. So we have to follow the rules for USSSA.

You are definitely correct. I know that a coach recently called the ASA head of Ohio who said there was a procedure to release and re-roster players, but there was definitely paperwork and signatures involved. We passed because our DD's had a weekend stuffed with practice and swimming pool bonding time with their primary team, so it wasn't in their team's bet interest.

@lewam3:

Yes, there are new provisions in the ASA Code (oddly, mostly in the Definitions Section, which is not usually the place for provisions like releases) allowing for the release of players and I tentatively have concluded that the release can mean the sub gets to go back to her old team, at least if she subbed in the same age category. As a practical matter, the issue usually arises only with respect to a roster that is "red-lined" as part of Championship Play, that is, for tournaments that can qualify teams to go either to ASA Regional Nationals (for Ohio, usually ASA Easterns) or ASA/USA play. If your DD subs in a sanctioned ASA tournament that is not "Championship Play", you should be ok going back to your regular ASA team without the official "release" papers, but if it were my DD I would still be inclined to ask the coach of the temporary team not to roster my DD. (Also, just as an aside, if you intend to rely on the new "release" procedure to obtain a release from a red-lined roster, the new provisions say that this procedure has to take place before the local association's main tournament, which for Ohio teams who are sanctioned by Ohio ASA means before ASA States . . . Cincy and Dayton Metro teams would have a different release procedure deadline . . . this stuff gets extremely complicated and especially with a new provision it's hard to tell exactly how the release will play out). (And finally, I don't read the new release provisions to eliminate picking up players for regional or USA nationals; those "pick up" provisions are still in the Code).

But the original questions was whether the player could play up in age group and then return to the lower age group. For the ASA, that is a whole other kettle of fish. I concluded a couple of years ago that a player could not play in two age classifications within the JO Division (which includes Girl's fastpitch) for Championship Play. If I have time and the patience to plow through the ASA Code and confirm that understanding today or tomorrow, I'll post again.

Thanks for all the responses. I conclude that there are some rules in place for those looking to qualify, that are overlooked in the interest of allowing teams to have some flexibility. Otherwise it would be near impossible trying to find temporary substitutes (playing up or not).
