Each year we have an orientation for our entire incoming freshman class and one of the discussions revolves around the topics of changes, challenges and choices - better known as the "Three C's". It is always interesting to have a conversation with these athletes and listen to their biggest concerns for the upcoming year. Not surprisingly, some are the changes like being away from home and making new friends, some are the challenges such as academics and playing time. The main area that we find our discussion to revolve around although is the simple concept of choices.

I have always told our players that life is the sum of the choices we make. Choices are really where the rubber meets the road. Let's face it - change is inevitable, growth is optional. You will always face changes and challenges - but you will be defined by the choices you make in life. Will you have the strength of character to live by your values? What will you do in those defining moments when you have to make tuff choices or succumb to the pressures of the wrong circle? As one student-athlete said, "Make responsible decisions. It only takes one mistake to jeopardize something special." It has been said that courage is the first of human qualities, because it is the quality that guarantees all others. Do you have the courage to make the tough but right, decisions?
