Closing a Thread

What determines when a thread gets closed. I was watching and participating in the GAPS discussion. Then BAM its closed. Nothing was said that was deragatory - yet it is closed. I have seen other POSTS that get nasty yet stay open.

Who or What determines the closure ?
What are the rules for closure ?

As long as no one / name is being blasted it should stay open for discussion.

I would suggest eliminating the offending post not the topic....

I think "Big Brother" closes a thread when the subject is getting into personal attacks, or just arguments between a few people.

In other words, when nothing productive is being accomplished.

Does this sum it up correctly, Bear?

Pretty much. On the GAPSS threads I had already bounced several posts and the thread was doing nothing but complaining about how unfair things were - after a couple pages of that it's time to let it die.

Well, I personally looked and didn't see anything out of the ordinary.. but then again ... I got on the end of the thread since I got home from Clinton late Monday night before I seen the threads.

Obviously, when it rains , people get all upset. Why? It's rain people !!!! As for umpires, a TD in ASA has no control over what he receives as umpires. ( This is the reason I try to stay away from ASA sanctioned events until they change). So for the meantime, TD has no control of umpires. Bottom line.

No TD should be slammed for umpires in the State of Ohio that are being used at their event !!!! People can slam me for my umpires if they wish as I am probally the only TD in Ohio that "controls" who he gets for umpires. Umpires can make or break your tournament as a TD and it is unfair.

Fair weathered Tournament Directors are a plenty here in Ohio. Adverse conditions and they are done for the weekend. We see it all the time here in Ohio. I had a coach over this past weekend tell me when we had a light rain on Sunday morning in Clinton.. after the huge gully washers we received Saturday evening and Sunday morning.... that "most TD's would have cancelled this event and kept our money !!". But, I'm one of those crazy TD that will do everything possible to play and give the parents their money's worth. I think my coaches at the Clinton event found out. I asked them to "trust" my judgement and they did and I thank them for their vote of confidence. And we played under "safe" conditions all day Sunday.

We played in Clinton. Would have been on time at 10am if it hadn't started to rain again. Watching weather is a TD's job. Thinking of adverse conditions and what you are going to do... should be thought about THREE WEEKS before the tournament. Problem is many don't... I call them "Fair-Weather Tournament Directors".

One day, you all will figure it out and coaches will book into tournaments and locations KNOWN to be able to handle rain and get back up and running for the sake of their parent's financial commitment. Nothing worse to parents to spend huge amounts of money on travel and motels... and nothing !!! No effort by the TD to get up and going, etc.... This is not the case with the GAPPS in my opinion. Mike has always taken the time to make it a go if it could be done. ALWAYS and has for years.

As for dropping a loser's bracket.. NORMAL. That's ALWAYS the first option and everyone knows that. It's nothing new to the softball world. Just new to the "newbies".

This is NOT the case with Mike Wilson of the GAPPS. The GAPPS tournament has ALWAYS been one of the premier events in Ohio besides Stingrays. ALWAYS. Years now. Always well ran... and everyone knows that !!!!

So why slam a man over rain and what can be done. One side of town could have gotten more rain than another side of town... different locations take different prep to get up and running again. Each field location is different. Each individual field is different in reality and what it takes to get that one field up as well as the others. Bottom line.

So, Mike Wilson of the GAPPS.... from one TD to another.... thank you for the hard work you do to try and make your event a yearly showcase for the DD of this and surrounding states. Thank you for the countless hours spent to make this tournament a place to be for the coaches and the girls. Thank you for recruiting college coaches for the DD's to be seen and possibly given an opportunity to play college ball based on your event. IF just ONE girl is seen.. that's ONE more. ONE more child that has an opportunity to fulfill her life-long dream !!!

Get over it people.

If the posts get really bad, some get deleted so it appears to be very civil unless you were there at the time. You may see nothing worth closing it, but that doesn't mean there wasn't something up there that shouldn't have been there.

My guess is Mike did all he personally , POSSIBLY the tourney was actually understaffed to handle any rain at all, when some age groups play and others get sent home it just doesn't set well. The fields that we saw at GAPSS were super fields , brick dust , crowned , very nice. (and we played at 3 diff' locals and I went and watched ball at 2 other places) . You will never convince me that by 2pm AT THE LATEST that the majority of fields were not playable. From 2pm you can run 4 rounds of games . 2 , 3;30 5, 6;30 and even leaves an hour for an 8pm game. And some locations actually had lights I'd guess. The radar was clear after the rain stopped at 10am. would it have taken a large effort ? Yep . But thats what I'd expect from one of top 2 tournies held in ohio.

Never seen that phrase before. :lmao:

I agree but I think it's okay to complain about the ASA ump's but make sure you direct it at ASA and not the TD. I doubt ASA cares enough to read what we post on OFC so if you have a gripe, send an email to ASA.

Thanks Hitter. I consider you the most respected man in Ohio behind Mr. Clark ( Johnnies ) ;) . I'd love to meet you one day in the near future. I really wanted to go to the Static fundraiser this past winter and I couldn't make it.

I'm just tired of hearing people complain over rain and what can be done. Everyone I guess has opinions ..... and I have mine ( to which I get in trouble alot for :lmao: ). But, I have ceased to care.

I do the best I can do.. give out the best I can in awards for the girls, find diamonds and locations that can take rain ( proven track record ) and still they don't come...

You'd think one day they'd figure it out... hopefully soon before I retire from this game and move to Toledo (special message to someone I know ;) ) .

I have personal feelings about college showcases with 10u, 12u and 14u as fillers. But, that is my opinion.

But, thank you again, Hitter, for your nice comment. My best to you.

Yeah, but how do you choose what age group plays and who should go home. I guess maybe the older age groups should stay because it is their time. No matter what you are going to have people that are unhappy. Let's face it, rain is not a good thing when we play this game outside. I was very impressed with the fields at Liberty High School.

I don't know who the umpire was for our Hawks vs Buckeye Heat Toledo, but he was one of the best that I have ever seen. He had total control of the game.

Mike, I appreciate all the time and effort that you put into this tourney to help get our girls exposure. Thanks again for inviting us to one of the top tourneys in Ohio.

MD, the scenario you outlined was the exact scenario the tournament board outlined during the rain delay.

As I started receiving reports (while it was still raining) from the high school coaches about the state of their fields (3+ hours/per field to get ready - 40+ bags of diamond dry per field), and I watched the four fields at Liberty Park become lakes right in front of my eyes. Our decision was to wait until it stopped raining and re-assess at 11.

Then I came back to the shelter at Liberty Park where several 16u/18u coaches were sitting, I told them it wasn't looking good based on the reports I was getting and the fact that we had to bring up 10 fields all at the same time by no later than 2:00 (and that didn't include any of the other age groups). I told them we were going to re-assess at 11:00 (I think it was 10:00 at the time). To a man, they told me if there was a chance we were going to keep them around till 2:00 and then send them home - do it now. They all said they came to get college exposure for their players and didn't want to sit around all day for a chance to win a trophy. As soon as I heard that, I made the decision to cancel 16/18 and focus on the younger age groups.

The numbers didn't work for losers brackets at 12u and 14u, the decision to drop the losers bracket was an easy one (welcome to rain on Sunday in a double elimination tournament). The only decision I would have made differently in hind sight the whole weekend was regarding 10u. I overlooked the fact that 10u had fewer teams and was further along in bracket play than the other age groups. By the time I had figured it out, I had already delivered the message and set the action plan in motion. That one is on me.

Volunteers had nothing to do with what happened. If the rain would have happened Saturday afternoon, we would have worked all night to have those fields ready by Sunday. The issue was time - we didn't have enough time.

I will make a comment about volunteers in general however, unfortunately this world is filled with a lot more 'takers' than there are 'givers'. The people who have dds involved in our 3 high school softball programs and do virtually nothing to contribute to their success throughout the year are the same people who did nothing to contribute to the success of this tournament. They know who they are and so does everyone else. I have zero respect for people like that and they will be well served to stay away from me for the next 4 years of my dd hs career. On the otherhand, the people who regularly contribute, contributed as usual regardless of their circumstances (and yes many of them were Olentangy community parents/kids playing for the Turbos and driving back and forth from Pickerington to help).

This will be the last time I will explain myself. I take full responsibility for the decisions that were made and other than the 10u decision, I would make them the exact same way again.

Sometimes people/parents just don't know the conversations between coaches and TD when it comes to rain delays and their thoughts.

Don't have to explain yourself, Mike. Like I said, anyone who is anyone in Ohio knows you are about softball and these girls being seen.

I'm probally not the best one to defend you... since I seem to be a not well-liked person on here.

But, facts are facts. I've said my peace !!!

the complete explanation is what I needed to hear. thank you. MD

PS --Mike - you are a stand up guy--if more people had the gumption (is that a word ?) to put as much into fastpitch as you do then manpower for fields would not have been a problem .
