Thought of another one.........

23. When Coaches give players rides to practice, tournaments, etc. because the parents are too busy, or tied up with other commitments, or too cheap to pay for gas.

I agree with many of those coaches comments but despite those, I love coaching and that is why I have done so for the last 13 years. However, we are switching and I am not coaching because this is not about me. I will miss it dearly but I am putting my kiddo in a situation that I think will give her a better chance to get showcased. It is, after all, about our kids. I am sure that I will be back in the game, God willing, soon enough, either as a ump, coach of a 10u team (starting over) with my dd coaching. I will say that the group of parents that we have had the last 2 years are the best of my 13yr career. And Robinson isn't too bad either.

Coach Murph

You are right. I love coaching. I'm not complaining about the work we put in to what we do, I was just trying to let the non-coaches know that there is a ton of work involved in coaching.

So am I to understand that you just announced your retirement as a coach for now?

Good post. The only breaks Coaches get are:

1. Calls from irate parents at all hours of the day.
2. They get a break from having to spend time with their spouses.
3. No social life whatsoever.
4. They become extremely proficient at prepping fields for practices/games.

The list goes on................

Who wouldn't want all the glitz and glamour of being a Coach?

Classic! :)

very well stated Coach Murph, It is getting tougher and tougher for me to coach, and talking to those closest to me, they feel the same. I am only hanging at this point because I love coaching h.s. and being around kids and helping them with life outside softball [though i'm sure some of my parents wish i'd hang it up!] I had the pleasure of meeting you and Mike Robinson, you are BOTH true gentlemen. I wish you both and your daughters the best, you are the kind of individuals who I dream about as h.s. coach and director of Magic, having kids play for us. Your kids are WONDERFUL, considerate, kind young ladies!

Yep - hanging them up - pulling up a chair and maybe even the plastic cup with an adult beverage! Will be a transitional summer!

Magis SGS - thanks for the kind words. I love being around the game. It is a great game and I have had the pleasure of meeting many quality people in the game. We had a good time in Utah and it was an experience.

is this a "isn't this what mandan does" thread?

there's a lot of reasons for leaving...

they ran out of mascots for your DD's HOH team
They ran your but out of town
The Phoenix/Doom org needed another coach to drive a trailer or a hitch for a trailer
The Buckeye Heat creates a Classics South, East or West club
The Hawks realize they can fit 200 more kids in a cobata clinic and create 4 10u teams
The dad wants to have as many org shirts as his rent-a-daughter
Glen Widener needs an assistant (yeah right)

You now get to join that "elite, intelligent all knowing" coaching fraternity known as the "arm chair quarterback" and finally see what parents knew all along, NO coach knows what the heck they are doing! :)

Murph, Congratulations! Enjoy your time off. This is going to be a good time to relax a little, refresh yourself and maybe get a few things done around the house and enjoy some extra time with your family. It won't be long and you will be back at it.

This thread got TOTALLY hi-jacked. LoL

I think that many coaches are just looking for that comfort zone, but yet there are some that are never satisfied.

Coach Murph you are right! As many problems and headaches we face as coaches, I WOULDN'T CHANGE A THING!!!!! To see your ladies succeed, the look of pride in there eyes when they know they have done it right! :yahoo:

Winning is great and we all love that part of it, but i would be willing to bet that most of you dont do it for the "wins", but you do it for the love of the game and your ladies!

Nice Post Donny. This time of year is when the coaches who are in the game for the right reasons are having withdrawl symptoms and missing their players.

As frustrating as some of the things on the list created can be at the end of the day to say you had some small part in a players growth as a player and person makes the experience priceless!

Very good point!!

The circle of coaches that do stay active Win or Lose should say somthing to the parents as well but is always over looked, it's more than the win.
Judging only by wins of a team only can steer a player one way. Sometimes it can be very good to be that player who does play on a team that can use their skills to boost it up.
The coaches love for the sport and that look in the players eyes when they finally see, exicute and live what has been taught to them is priceless. I have seen many a player come and go but all have improved on the stepping stones the coaches have provided.

Teams need coaches who care for more than the Big W....... the players make it worth while when you see that smile! helps to win too but man that last tournament we played in I was so proud of our team and it was worth all the efforts to get there!
