Coaching expectations & Guidelines

Shouldn't all organizations have a set of "written" coaching guidelines and expectations. I was looking at the Ohio Hawks web-site and was very impressed by all the things they have in there Coaching Policy. Others should follow their example. Like how they address coaching attire, how & when to communicate with parents/players, pre-game expectations and social expectations involving drinking or too much of it. Thanks Hawks for some good ideas for our coaches.

Sounds like a shameless plug to me. LoL

We have all our coaches sign a coaches code of conduct. The difference between us and many orgs is we actually enforce it. Doesn't do any good to have it if you're not going to enforce it. We also have a players and a parents "code of conduct" that must be signed and adhered to.

It's all about marketing when you have to publicize that you have a code of conduct. We have always used it as a tool rather than a marketing piece.

Thanks for the ideas, just trying to look at different organizations expectations. Not a plug don't know anyone from Hawks. I agree follow through with them. Especially game attire (flip flops are ridiculous),
pre-game warm-up and shouldn't be silly drunk in front of players and smoking. Seems like summer ball has less expectations and can get away with more than school ball coaching.

I wear flip flops all the time, it doesn't diminish my coaching ability because I don't like tennis shoes in the summer. Remember, most coaches are volunteering their time....start paying them 20,000 a year and then you can tell them what they can and can't wear. I understand some rules are needed to keep the team running smoothly but attire and when you can and can't talk to other parents...come on!! Why not just say THANK YOU VERY MUCH for donating all your time, knowledge, and money (most still pay the team fee for their kid to play even though they are coaching) to the girls and the team???

Funny how just saying thank you has gone by the wayside:(

Varsity coaches only get between $4,000 and maybe $6,000 not $20,000. Sorry but it's not about being comfortable but looking professional and flip-flops don't do it for anyone. The part about having another adult around when talking to a parent is for the coaches protection. I invite you to check out the Hawks guidelines they are really good ideas to think about and follow.

Hey, you're starting to sound like Jack Nicholson in "A Few Good Men" :D

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

Sorry guys, it was way too close of a comparison to pass-up.

I've seen the Hawks guidelines....I still wear flip flops. I choose a coach based on their knowledge of the game, their ability to break it down and teach it, their ability to motivate the girls, their communication skills, and whether or not my dd likes them......not on their choice of foot wear but that is just me. We all have our own priorities. ;)

Have to agree.......thanks would be nice. Most parents take for granted all that the coaches, and more importantly, assistant coaches do for their children.

Really if all you can complain about after your season is over is flip-flops then I would probably say find a new team that the coaches are in three piece suits on Sunday. If a coach chooses to drink after they are done coaching for the day then no problem. If you know they are drinking and you dont like it, here is a novel idea, be a parent and remove the kid from the area where it is happening.

Flip- flops i personnally dont wear them cause they hurt that area between my toes and the toe jam is just outragous, but if a coach wants to wear them, so be it. Move on.

Amen to you brother. This woman just signed up yesterday and has had 3 out of whatever posts being negative while 'hiding' behind the hawks org. Which I mean no disrespect to. The hawks org is top notch. This is obviously one of 'our' parents being disgruntled(based on a post in another thread). No class and hiding behind a new screen name.

Flip Flops and Beer Drinkiing? Really ??

1 of my asst. coaches always use to wear flip-flops -who cares!

Coaching is a thankless job and more and more coaches stop doing it because the headaches outweigh the good things!

Depending on which sanction you play, flip flops can be against the rules for coaches to wear.
