I'm aware we don't see much discussion on recreational or youth league girls softball on the forum. That's the very reason I've became a member, yes let the bashing begin! I love Coaching recreational league softball and my hope is to find other that would like to discuss rec-ball.
I will even start my first post today and hope other rec, youth or all star type coaching join me.
As a girls softball coach, I teach the right skills to beginners on how to hit, throw and catch a softball. I believe that the success of any player is determined by how well they have been trained and how they have practiced. The first thing to know about coaching younger girls is that many of the girls will be playing for the first time so, I'm always very patient as they learn. I usually explain the basic rules and show them how to apply in the game.
First, I emphasize on the use of the right equipment. The girls need to wear the right uniform, helmet, chest protector, gloves and have the right bat. This will depend on the position that one will be playing. Secondly, they must know their positions which include; the pitcher, catcher, shortstop, first base position etc. In addition, I teach them proper defensive skills as they improve on their fastpitch skills. In fact, there are a great many free girls softball fastpitch drills on this site I've used over the years game-ex.com/drills/
Further, I teach them the playing techniques on how to position their hands, the elbows, shoulders and the front arm as they play. I also demonstrate to them on how to make a stance. Most of the drills should focus on throwing, fielding, and hitting the ball. Materials like books and the internet can be used for effective learning. As a good coach I help them recite the rules of the game with a lot of patience. Another important aspect is teaching them how to control their emotions in case the game does not work in their favour this happens quite a bit.
Finally, as a coach I use hands-on coaching during the game.
Ok I've done it! If you don't care for the lower level of the game that's fine. But I'm here to learn more.
