Is it legal equipment in softball for a fielder to wear a hat with a college logo on the front? Tonight the opposing pitcher had a red hat with a big, black block "O".

Seriously, someone is worried if the hat a player is wearing in school ball is legal. Sound like the rules committee for my subdivision. Find something else to worry about.

In what manner did I express a "worry"? All I did was ask a question. I did not say whether I was for or against the hat. I just asked if it was legal equipment. Sorry, I thought that was what this forum was about.

Here is the NFHS rule:

3-2-5 . . . Headwear (caps, visors, headbands, ribbons, etc.) may be mixed. If worn, they must be white, black, beige or school colors (the colors are not required to be the same for team members). The logo may be any color. Flat items, no longer than 2 inches, used to control the hair, such as bobby pins, barrettes and hair clips, are permitted. Plastic visors, bandannas and hair-beads are prohibited.

I honestly can't see making a player take off this hat, but if you really get technical...Rules state that the uniform may have only one manufacturer's logo. If their jerseys are, say, Under Armour, and the cap has a Nike emblem, by the strictest reading of the rules the hat would have to go.

From what I now understand, the logo on a hat worn in the field by a high school softball player can be college, pro, travel ball, etc. Thanks to all who have responded and provided constructive input.

Ha! That is funny. In all seriousness, I think you should write your congressman and senator. This matter requires immediate attention.

MD I know some coaches that don't allow you to wear your travel team gear during school ball. I have no problem with a coach making those rules. In fact during school ball my dd's team gets school bags & helmets. Nobody bats with their travel helmet on.

My daughter used her travel team helmet this year. I'm not sure why, but this year the school did not provide helmets for the MS team. I'm guessing they were appropriated by the HS team, or new middle school coach was unsure of where to get them, as the MS team received new helmets last year. I happened to be present when last year's coach gave the speech about taking care of the shiny new helmets. No bags, either. We had to purchase pants, but did receive shirts to use. Woohoo!

I guess all of the money was tied up in replacing grass with turf for two football fields.
