I talked to our coach a former player at OSU for the last four years. All teams in the big 10 have a detailed report on each batter and the coaches call the pitches in the big 10. After playing four years for OSU I think she would know.

Totally agree with sbfamily. I don't know a single college team that doesn't have a coach calling pitches.

True. My daughter plays DIII in the O.A.C. Coach calls the pitches, and most of the opponents do, too.

I know that, ideally, a catcher should know how to call a game. But in all honesty, there really isn't much of a need for it, as the coaches want to call it.

I kind of chuckled with all the comments on the 18U state threads about not letting catchers call the pitches.

My daughter pitched D3 OAC as well, and the catchers called the pitches 3 of her 4 years ... but her preference would have been for the coaches to always call them to be honest. I am sure we will get someone saying that the coaches have to call them because their coaches when they were younger wouldn't let the catchers do it so they never learned!

We let our pitchers and catchers call their own game. Not because we want them to get used to doing it for college but because the thought is it makes them think the game as it happens. Not sure if that is smart - but I have never been accused of being too smart.

The pitchers and catchers should learn how to call a game. It doesn't hurt and it could certainly help a kid in the recruiting process. Bully for you Flarays!!

Maybe OSU should start letting the catchers do it.......just saying.....:)

I talked to at least 20 college coaches when this came up back in the early spring.. 95% call the game themselves, the vast majority of them think that while it might be a plus that the girls call the game in travel ball, it makes no difference/impact on their recruiting them. Had one tell me that just calling the game means nothing if they really have no idea why/what they are calling in respect to the batter/situation- while it sounds good in theory, in practice you cant measure what is really going on in the kids head.

IMHO, no way can you convience me that it is better for the team to have the catcher call the game - IF the coach and his/her staff is doing their job and research on the batters...

Not sure if Gulas calls them for you dd at AU. If the new coach called them for Simpson and Myers at Miami , not sure she is going to change at OSU. The one thing that is different in travel ball over college. In College you have detailed scouting reports on every batter. You would be in shock how much game film they have. Talking to an Olmpic coach they had film on every batter and it was like baseball. Travel ball we play four or more games some days and you see teams you have no idea how they hit. Now if you are lucky and play the same team twice you might have an idea of how to pitch to someone. I guess what I'm saying is this is apples and pears. Just not the same thing. I know we call them in high school, because we have prior game records of what a kid can do.

It was until SBFamily brought in the 18U States angle.:)

I believe NKU lets the catcher call the game....depending on whom is catching.

Fairmont State in WV has their catcher call all the pitches. Then after the pitch has the catcher flash them to someone on the bench who records them on a sheet of paper!!! ;&

It depends on the coach and on the catcher. At Kent the catchers called their game unless it was a catcher who didn't feel comfortable calling the pitches, then the coach did it. As mentioned above, we had every stat and detail about every batter we faced so it wasn't too hard to call the games. In travel ball the catchers have to be much smarter because their information is much more limited.
