College teams using different bats

Was watching Arizona play and seen players swinging LXT's, Mako, and CF6. I thought most programs had contracts with 1 manufacturer, is this something new?

Thats up to the coach. Most schools that swing one brand , the coach is getting a paycheck from the manufacture to do so.

I highly doubt that the equipment that any college team uses is 100% up to a coach. I don't think they have a lot of say in it.

I know a guy who started his college coaching career at Iowa State. The head coach who brought him in has a shoe deal with Asics, his name is on a line of their shoes. The ISU athletic department had a deal with Asics so everything was ok, the kids on the team wore Asics shoes. The same coaching staff moved to Penn State a few years ago and for a few years they weren't even allowed to wear Asics in their practice room unless they removed the logo because Penn State is a Nike school. It didn't matter in competition. They had to wear Nike. Period. I haven't talked to the guy I know who works there about it but I'm pretty sure I saw a kid or two from their team wearing Asics the last time we were around. Perhaps the coach, the school, Asics, and Nike were able to work something out. I assure you it didn't just happen becuse the coach said so though.

I wonder how many know you are talking about Cael.......they look like they are going to sweep it again this year.

AZ used Mizuno bats the last 3 years under an agreement that also included ball gloves, equipment bags and protective gear (here). Their offense has been subpar and people questioned the Mizuno bats. Candrea told a group of campers this winter he's allowing the players to use any bat they want this year. No mention of whether the players had to buy them or not.

Shoe agreements are a different animal than sport-specific equipment, so I don't think they're applicable to this topic.

That's correct... from an email that Mike sent back last May about the Mizuno bat and equipment. It is a smart approach, confidence is a big factor in hitting... using a bat you are confident in is key as a player.

Doug,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but this is a busy time of the season for us. Regarding my relationship with Mizuno.......it has been wonderful and their service is the best! We have been very pleased with their gloves and protective gear.

To be honest with you, I am presently trying to decide which way to go with the bats and leaning toward letting my players use any bat that they feel confident with due to the competitive nature of our sport today! Nothing against Mizuno as some of our players may choose to swing them. I look at bats today as golfers look at irons and woods. Everyone has their own preference due to look, feel, and how they perform.

I would think that the bat is not as much an issue in your program as it is at the college level. I know that you would love working with Mizuno as I have for the past three seasons!!!

Hope this helps and I promise you they will continue to enhance their selection of bats for the future.

Talk to Bouldersdad about the LXT's Louisiville is using. One of my high school girls got a free bat from Karen Weekly since Teen. uses the Worth 454's. We used it at practice saturday and boy is that bat hot! We bought two more for the team this year.

Just wondering if college coach can give bats to a high school player?

She is a freshman so at that time she had not played a high school game yet, so it wouldn't matter. We do not have a JR high team.

i would disagree. the NCAA Division 1 Softball Recruiting Rules have language in them discussing when a student athlete becomes a prospect- you are correct that for softball it is generally 9th grade but there is an exception which says that a student athlete can become a "prospect" if they are given or provided a benefit that is not otherwise provided to the general population by the school (something along those lines).

I just thought.... Since all the TOP prospects are recruited when they are in 8th grade. What a great tool to use... Give a used bat by the team or sweat shirt.

Same goes for permitting these 7th and 8th graders to attend the $$$$ camp for free.....;&

I expect Karen knows the NCAA rules inside and out. It would be interesting to hear her take on it.

I was expecting/hoping SBFamily's reply would be something like Karen really gave the bat to his team as a demo or it was a prize/award.

Mizuno bats are poop. I bet AZ runs will go up this year. Mako/LXT are the 2 hottest bats this year.

Kid was at a camp and got hurt. Karen called and offered her a bat at a reduced rate. So it was not free after all.

It's real tight.

They probably need bonus points from David Taylor and Ed Ruth or a Minnesota loss.

Never fear. I heard Cael only agreed to compete in OKC because they made many changes at the venue that started in the parking lot.
