I know there are a limited amount of 'official' visits....what about unofficial...what is expected/allowed in an unofficial compared to an 'official'??? Next week is the week, I am just trying to ensure we stay compliant...

THANKS!!!!!

You may make an unlimited amount of unofficial visits. In general, official visits are those where the coach has invited you to come and picks up expenses related to the visit.

Unofficial - You pay your way and cannot meet off campus. You have to buy your own meals and hotels. If you eat off campus you cannot even sit at the same table

You are allowed to make 5 official visits to NCAA participating schools. Official visits, the student athlete generally spends the night on campus and the parents are given a hotel and a few meals, some entertainment is allowed for the student athlete. Unofficial are generally same day visits and the student athlete pays their own way except if they eat on campus that is covered. There are a few hundred pages on this subject, hope this helps out some.

You can have limited official visits. The college pays for your transportation, food, lodging ext. I saved my official visits to the Strongest Div I schools I was recruited for. When it's official and its a big school they get you tickets to games and go all out for you. It makes you feel awesome, but don't let them fool you play hardball to get the deal you want.

How do visits stack up-by that I mean, if your dd is fortunate enough to have interest from multiple sports, do you still only get 5, or is it 5 per varsity sport? And from I have seen, the D3 and NAIA rules are a lot different in terms of D2 and D1? Like the original poster, any help for us newbies is greatly appreciated.

Couple of definitions from the guide:

Official visit. Any visit to a college campus by you and your
parents paid for by the college. The college may pay all or some of
the following expenses:

• Your transportation to and from the college;
• Room and meals (three per day) while you are visiting the
college; and
• Reasonable entertainment expenses, including three
complimentary admissions to a home athletics contest.

Before a college may invite you on an official visit, you will have
to provide the college with a copy of your high school transcript
(Division I only) and SAT, ACT or PLAN score and register with the
Eligibility Center.

Unofficial visit.
Any visit by you and your parents to a college
campus paid for by you or your parents. The only expense you
may receive from the college is three complimentary admissions to
a home athletics contest. You may make as many unofficial visits
as you like and may take those visits at any time. The only time you
cannot talk with a coach during an unofficial visit is during a dead
period.

5 official visits. Pretty much sure D1, D2 and D3 are the same. You can go to as many as you want but 5 colleges will pay for your trip. I would use your official visits to schools you are very interested in and are possibly farther away from your home. The schools that I visited out of State, they paid for our plane tickets too. Good idea to take a notebook so that you can write key points down...You are so nervous and want to make sure when you leave you won't second guess your decision.
