Missing practice for a college visit

What is the general consensus in high school(parents and coaches) about missing a practice or game for a campus visit? or missing for no apparent reason?
Are there any penalties associated with this in your school? Just like to hear ....

Have to say that I cannot think of a more positive and encouraging reason to miss practice than for a college visit. There is a huge difference in missing practice for a reason, any reason, than there is for just not showing up.

I can't imagine a coach who would have a problem with a girl missing a practice for a college visit. If he/she does have a problem they are very selfish. IMNSHO

College visit is an acceptable reason in my mind. Our school doesn't even ask for the letterhead anymore. They asked on the first one in the Fall, but now don't for some reason.

Now just any reason, leaves a bit too the imagination.. Let's say the Cup Teams which we just did. Their younger sister went with us as a family trip. We fully expected her not to play in a B-Ball game upon our return, nor should she have played in my mind. But the coach let her start and play almost the whole game. So be it they only have 7 girls, but I still would have made her sit personally...

There aren't too many reasons I'll allow a girl to miss practice, but a college visit would be one of those reasons. I'm assuming we're not talking about multiple visits, though. Unless a girl is a three-sport athlete, she should make plans to do most of the visits during a time of the year she's not involved on a team.

What "Practice" are we talking about. There is no "softball practice" going on right now. Or are we talking about a general time frame? :-?

Johnnies,
It could be for any sport at any time.... This is always a touchy subject of missing sports for variety of reasons..

I was talking b-ball for mine... But let's see, freshman b-ball or a once in a lifetime educational trip... HMMM no brainer there on where she would be...

We try to schedule college visits during the off season. However, we are finding coaches beginning to show interest now that have not in the past. We will still try to schedule outside of practice or at least so that they are only late for practice.

Miss practice for the college visit. Period. Let the coach know it is in fact a visit. However, I do not know a lot of colleges putting forth efforts right now for visits. I believe they just started playing. They would be stretched to entertain visits at the moment. Maybe let you watch a game or practice. I could be wrong but I would think right now they are in full bore.

The visits that parents are setting up are for educational visits to the campus, not for playing for the respective college or university.

It shouldn't matter if it's a sport coach visit, or just a college site visit. You're going for an education first and foremost....

There are a lot of schools who do not start their schedule until March. We are going on a visit this Friday and are scheduled to meet with the coach as well. I tend to like fall visits better at the DII and NAIA level since the girls are allowed to practice once with the team.

It is okay if she was playing in 3 different sports/activities that limited time she could be away during Fall/Winter. If she sat around all school year until softball/sport/activity started, then as a coach I'd be a little peturbed, but would allow it without penalty.

When we went with son on college visits, all were in the Fall of his senior year (3 for college, 3 for football). He missed practice then, but coach excused him.

With that said by the original poster!! Visit the college. It is all about academic's right???

Make sure it is an acceptable excuse set forth by the school..

Most times it is.
