Is it just me or has there been alot of errors that you normally wouldn't see during a 14U tournament weekend? (or even a 12U tournament)

I think as the hitters get better and stonger you will see more errors,,, Good hitting teams put alot of pressure on even the best defensive team.....JMO

These women have insane bat speed and the pitchers that are throwing 65+ MPH its legit, when you see them hit live and in person I am suprised there arent more errors, they are so close and these women just smoke the ball, one small short hop and it instantly becomes a tough play.

I'd say also there are way too many questionable or bad calls by the umpires.

Who else agrees that the Texas A&M vs. Florida game was a real nailbiter?
We found out which team wanted it more and had the most heart.

Come on, some of these errors they are making are ones 12 year olds make. Pop ups to first, outfielders running by balls and the baserunning mistakes that are horrendous! What the heck is up with that? The Florida girl that walks right into the double play, Friday night the one girl thinks it's a foul and walks all the way back to first after stealing second, pitchers that can't throw to bags...

Pretty ugly for that level...

Loved the Florida / Texas A&M games esp the second....one minute routing to the Gators next for the Aggies.....love it when the little Frosh is the hero ! Still not sure if that line drive was fair or foul......Maybe my DD will be the frosh that makes or breaks the big game next year....yeh D2 but heah the big game is the big game...that is what makes this sport OOOOOHHHH so much better than the rest,LOL...

I know I allways catch heat when I voice an opinion about Mike Candrea but here we go. Ask the seniors on the Arizona Wildcats how it felt to be recruited by Mike then have to have him watching from the stand as they were eliminated. Bottom line let someone like Lisa Fernandez coach the USA Team. This team really doesnt need a guy like Candrea.

Flip the script imagine the United States had an olympic football team and had a coach like Jim Tressel coaching it. Then during the National Championship week he went overseas and left the team and let an assistant coach, coach :D the biggest game of the season. How would that senior class feel?

Bottom line Rich Rosinski could coach the Team USA and they would still be successful. :D

I think FLA should have gone to the final game in the collage world series!! But Texas A&M did well last night in holding FLA from getting a run! ? ( But so did FLA but they let Texas A&M get the one run in the 9th inning)

Excellent point. ?I hadn't really thought about it like that, but you're right, it must have been tuff for the Arizona girls playing against "their" coach leading other players. ? :-/

Also agree with your awesome suggestion re: Lisa Fernandez for coach---Brilliant!!!

As a Florida fan, I was disappointed that they got eliminated. They had an awesome team this year, but that's how things go. Much to my disappointment was the baserunning blunder that turned into a double play at the end of the game. YOU JUST CAN'T DO THAT. that is something I go ever contstantly with my 12U girls and this is D-1. I even keep it simple for them so they dont' have to remember situations not to do it in. here it is, Listen up Florida! Never, ever, never just give yourself up. You may only be able to slow or stop for just a half second, but it may just save an out, a game, hell a World Series!!! Sorry to say it but that girl had to see that play happening in front of her well within time to stop and force a run down, maybe she even gets the second basement to panic and throw to first to get the out and she is safe at second, but at least only allow one out..

Ok I will let it go now.

We taught 6-8 yr. old coach pitch teams not to run into a tag. ;D

Excellent point about Candrea - was thinking the same thing as they kept showing him in the stands. Told my daughter his seat is in the wrong place.

You have to give some props to Texas A&M. They held their own against the number one ranked team. The 8 and 9 hitters (soph and frosh) generated the run. Then Amanda Scarbrough goes out to the mound to speak with Megan Gibson about Floridas pinch hitter. Her game plan worked and they won the game.

A wise old girls fast pitch coach once told me the most important skills were

pitching
hitting
speed
defense

In that order. He went on to say position players were a "dime a dozen".

If that's really the conventional wisdom I'd say they are getting what they deserve.

Anyway, I'm not a huge softball fan but pulled for A&M because they are from my area. I did enjoy the tournament for the most part but considered the defense beyond excusable at times.

I would think many of the players have three of the skills mentioned above and substitute the one that's missing with shear will and determination. And there's nothing wrong with that.

^^^ Interesting perspective for a "Fastpitch Newbie" that is not a fan of the game. ?Actually surprising you're even on this site. ?::)

You are right. It is weird. But I was genuinely interested in watching the CWS games, partially because many of the players were from my area. And it was on ESPN, the Worldwide Leader. ;)

Specifically though, I was so shocked at some of the dropped balls that I did seek out a forum to see if anyone was talking about it. That's how I wound up here.

I usually watch a lot of the Little League World Series and don't recall ever seeing a first baseman miss a thrown ball or an infielder miss a pop up. I saw both of those in the CWS.

As blazer411 said, errors you would not expect a 14 year old to make.

Move the mound back 10 feet and you'd have better fielders I would think. As it is, some players play behind a pitcher all season who has an ERA of .040 and they could get a little rusty. But, by and large, I just don't think defense is as important to recruiters as the other things I mentioned.

I give the girls their props though. I sometimes just think there is a flaw in the game itself, in that, pitchers have figured out how to use that 43 feet better than hitters and pitchers don't rely on the defense behind them as much as in small ball.
