College World Series

I would have thought there would be at least one post on this board about the college world series and Northwestern being in the finals.

These are some of the best players in the country and a team from the Big Ten IS IN THE FINALS. Every coach on this board should be talking about this to their players. Every coach on here should be talking about it on here.

THIS IS A MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT. YES. THAT TEAM UP NORTH did win it all last year but lets not get apathetic to the fact that a BIG TEN TEAM IS IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP right now.

THIS IS HOW YOU GET PLAYERS EXCITED TO PLAY THIS GAME. Tape it and show it to your team. Tell them "THIS COULD BE YOU SOME DAY"

HELP this sport grow in your area by talking about it on this board.

You might be surprised on the impact it will have on a young player.

I agree Elliot, and we have been watching it in our house, but unlike Michigan ( which is the only time you will ever hear my husband routing for the Wolvarines, LOL) the Northwestern players are yet again mostly Arizona and California girls, with one kid from Missouri.....but you are right, it is a Big 10 team, just wish the Big 10 would recruit from the Big 10-11 states...., but your right it is a goal and we are finally seeing some Ohio girls in the Big 10, Ms. Pruner, and others , finally our kids are getting recognize by the Big 10.... Just wish the NW Bobcats would have showen up last night to play, maybe they will come tonight.......

luvfpsb: You speak the truth yes My house hold and the team have been watching and yes last night one team came to play and play they did. The outcome is far from over but keep in mind the pitcher for the other team is smoking hot. and the speed kills in the short game.

Did anyone think that the home plate umpire had a rather small strike zone? There were a number of calls that had me shaking my head. (I ended up with a headache)

My wife and I both thought it was a little small, especially when you consider how wide it was in the earlier rounds.

This is really hard to judge on TV. The AZ pitcher set the NCAA record tonight for strikeouts in a CWS. She also had 13 tonight.

Do you call that a tight strike zone or some good pitching? Maybe some of both the way NW was taking cuts at the ball tonight. They looked a little more comfortable tonight and had a couple of good opportunities to do some damage with the bats but missed their chance.

The female ump seemed to be a little stricter on the zone to me but again its hard to tell from the TV angle.

I was glad to see another team from this side of the country in the finals and from the Big Ten. :)

Arizona played some good ball this season, they have a great program there and Mike Candrea seems to be a class act. my dd and I enjoyed watching, analyzing and trying to predict each coaches next move in advance, sparked much dialoge between me and my little one. truly indeed baseball/softball is the greatest game ever, Abner Doubleday should be granted sainthood or given a national holiday or something! anyway congratulations to the wildcats.

I was a little disappointed to see that the umps allowed Arizona's pitcher to continue to hop during her pitch. ?If my dd did that in 12u rec, I would be called up and told that we had to fix that problem. ?Her drive foot left the ground before release EVERY pitch. ?

I have a suspicion that those umpires are there because they are the best in the game. It's easy for us to sit at home and analyze every call with the help of instant replay. I'm guillty of it myself. However, when you have a team as dominant as Arizona has been it is difficult to blame the game on the umpires. It is fun to watch and we should all learn a lesson from the players, coaches and umpires in the series. I saw noone screaming at or belittling any of the players. Both coaches and umpires treated each other with respect. The players did not act as if the world were coming to an end following a strike out, error or loss. All of this integrity and I am pretty sure they had a little more at stake here than we do every weekend. These young ladies, coaches and umpires set an excellent example for our girls. The sportsmanship and mutual respect of all involved is what I hope my daughter, your daughter and every parent, coach and umpire that watched take from the series :) :)

luvfpsb,

There is a girl on the NW roster from Kent, OH - Kristen Salamon. There are also 6 girls from Illinois and 1 from Indiana.

A post from a College softball web site I visit.

Fact #1: BCS school programs are closing the distance talent-wise with the Pac 10.

Fact #2: California is the hub of softball and location of the most talent.

Lets just hit the facts:

14 of 18 players on the 2004 Athens Olympic Team from California.

Almost 40% of 2006 WCWS athletes hail from California.

Fact #3: Most teams have closed the distance using California players (see Michigan & Northwestern).

I figure with the success of the non-west coast teams will further spark the game of softball in respective regions. Young girls from Tenn or the Chicago area can have a home team to root for. This will allow the team to pick up more & more local talent.

fact #4- The Pac 10 & west coast schools better watch out because the Big 10, SEC, ACC, and Big East have more football/basketball money than the Pac 10. This will result in better stadiums, traning facilities etc. This will eventually bring elite talent out of the Pac 10. Some Pac 10 schools have awesome facilities, but they may eventually pale in comparison.

Its time to close the gap with Ohio talent. Your girls should be getting these scholorships. Not girls from the West Coast or South or Southwest. The goal is not to make the HS team. That is a given for most serious players. Its to get them a college scholorship in OHIO. From the D-1 level on down.

Look at the roster or Ohio State and tell me where this coach is recruiting? Of course she is from the West coast.

Amen Elliot you made my point perfectly, not bad for a Texas boy, LOL. As we have one of those DD from Ohio that is trying to get recruited, I agree would like to see the our D1 schools take more interest in our athletes.....I know she is doing everything she can to be seen from frequent college clinic to being on a major traveling 18u team that goes to nothing but ASA and college showcases across the country, she has been continuously contacting the colleges that offer what she is interested in since her Freshman year and has been keeping them up to date on her stats and schedules....they have responded as is legal for the NCAA with invites to clinics and showing up @ the showcases to watch her so now we just have to wait and see in a year if it all was for not....She will be starting her Junior year in Sept....
I do think Ohio Fastpitch is starting to get the respect it deserves....like out Football players have for years....Just really wish Northwestern could have @ least not be shut out for the 2 games of the championship..... have a great season everyone

Luv Darlin ( he said in his best JR Ewing Voice)

I am a born and raised Ohioan transplanted into hells half nation by a band of deperados called Verizon.

I just also happen to love softball. The only sport that nearly caused me to divorce my wife of 25 years when I was a much younger and far more stupid man.

Well maybe. ;D
