JONESBOROUGH — Like objects in your side-view mirror, things were not what they appeared Wednesday at David Crockett’s softball field. With Daniel Boone firmly in control, the Lady Pioneers rose up for a six-run fifth inning to earn a 7-5 win that put them in a tie for first place in the Big Seven Conference. Crockett improved to 4-1 in league play and is tied with Science Hill. Boone took its first league setback and fell to 3-1. Here comes the comeback Boone led 5-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, but made a couple of defensive miscues. And once the Lady Pioneers got the momentum, they didn’t stop until they held a two-run lead. “They don’t surprise me,” said Crockett head coach Carla Weems, whose team improved to 14-6. “These girls are non-stop. I knew we could chip away, and I’m not going to give up on them until we’ve had that last at-bat in the bottom of the seventh. You just can’t give up on these girls.” Sydney Fox’s RBI single cut Boone’s lead to 5-2. With two outs and the bases loaded, Kara Weems dropped a bloop hit into left-center field to make it 5-4. Kat Pfeifer then tied the game with an RBI single. That brought Maddie Roy to the plate, and she delivered what turned out to be the game-winning hit — a two-run roped single to left field. “I was a little nervous getting up there at first because I knew I had a job to do,” said Roy. “I had confidence in myself and my teammates that we could get it done. So I just did my job, and it ended up in the best.” Moving forward Crockett certainly shook things up in the league, which looks like more of a dogfight than it did before the Lady Pioneers’ big win. “We definitely have the team to beat them this year,” said Roy. “We proved it on the field, and in the batters’ box.” Stats of note Crockett got two hits each from Roy and Kara Weems, who was also the winning pitcher despite surrendering 17 baserunners. Weems gave up eight hits and five runs with nine walks. She struck out seven. For Boone, Nickolette Ferguson gave up nine hits and seven runs in 4 2/3 innings. She also crushed a third-inning two-run homer that gave Boone a 3-0 lead. Ashley Starnes, McKenna Dietz and Kayla Hubbard each had two hits for the Lady Trailblazers. “We gave Crockett too many outs in the fifth inning,” said Boone head coach Jeremy Jenkins, whose team fell to 18-9. “You give them extra outs, and they’re as good of a hitting team as there is in our league. They got hot at the right time. Round one went to them, but we will play them again,” Jenkins said.
