DD Out For The Season

College Freshman DD out for the season with a tear in her rotator cuff. She worked her butt off not only with travel ball and the recruiting process to live her dream of playing college ball but worked her butt off to earn a starting position.

She was starting 2nd baseman then moved to SS (starting SS got hurt) and was batting cleanup. The pain was starting to affect the mental aspect of her game especially in hitting because after a while it hurt to hold her arm up to bat.

At least she got in one home run in her short lived season!

Just had to vent a little because like everyone out there they see how hard their DD's work to be recruited to play college ball.

Thanks...when we got the results from the MRI I told her I know you don't want to hear all of this "feel good" stuff right now but we'll get you thru this and you just come back in the fall season bigger, better, stronger, and faster! She did laugh at the faster part!

Uber_Jones...Thanks for the laugh and thanks for the prayers!!! Call in a favor to St. Christopher!

Coaches are going to file a medical hardship waiver (redshirt). It may or may not get approved since she played in a total of 14 games but only hit in 4 of those. She was insistent on playing and thought she could play through the pain until after the season until we found out there was actually a tear.

THEN she still didn't want to give up playing and wanted to play in the games that night after coming back from the doctors.

Thanks. At least she doesn't have to surgery right now. We pulled a favor and got her in to see the team physician for the Cleveland Indians and he wants her to go to physical therapy and she goes back in 6 weeks and if she is pain free will go on a throwing program. If there is pain he will do arthoscopic surgery. He may just have to get rid of scar tissue.

If you are seeing Dr. Shikendance (spelling), Lika or Vangelos she is in good hands they are great Doctors. Good luck

It is Dr. Schickendantz. That is why I didn't want to mess around with just any doctor and possibly do more harm to her shoulder.

I really can't believe how fast her injury happened. She never had problems with her shoulder until January and she was persistent on waiting until the season was over to get it looked at - now I can kick myself for not forcing her to go. There was a 2-3 week period also in January where she said her arm was feeling better. But you know these athletes a lot of them play with pain.

Hindsight is always 20-20 right.

Make sure you follow the doctors orders 100%, as well as the rehab schedule. Let me tell you I am still recovering from a major rotar cuff surger a year ago Thanksgiving. I wish I would have done everything exactly as they told me. I didn't feel I had time to do all of the rehab with work. . .I learned my lesson.

I have seen good results for younger persons and will keep her in my prayers.

Thank you all for the inspiration! I am trying to keep her spirts up it is just soo hard for her she wants to be out on that field. She is killin' me cuz she is throwing with her left hand and hitting with one arm because she cannot just sit at practice and do nothing!!! Athletes...!!!

feistymom: Luckily it is not torn completely. And that is what I keep stressing to her is how important the physical therapy is now and will be. I wish the best for you and your ongoing recovery.

Things happen for a reason...even though we may not know what that reason is at the moment.

We have gone through this before and you may want to try using the WhipHit as there is no vibration when using the bat as the rope dampens it. We have had several of our kids use it during rehab because of the no vibration and little to no weight effect. We can even attach weights to the handle using the Pro Cut.

This is a great tool for keeping her hand path and stride mechanics together also during her down time....go to theWhipHit.com and click on the viewer to see it in action. The boy is one of my students and is 12 years old and over the weekend he went 2 for 4 with a walk and a grand slam over the center field fence 300 feet and was estimated to have landed at about 315 feet.

HTF - So sorry to hear about your DD. We've been thru it with our own DD, twice, once as a college freshman and again right before her junior year. She rehabbed and came back again to finish her senior year, even winning a post season honor. As you said, everything happens for a reason. She’s now a college coach and is helping a couple of her players get thru there own injuries. Stay positive for her and follow the Docs orders to a T and she’ll be fine.

Can't she be redshirted?

Coaches are going to submit a medical hardship waiver. She has played in 14 games until the time came when she just couldn't do it anymore or even hold a bat up and 4 of those games were as a DH. So hopefully they will still grant her a medical redshirt.
