Pitching and Pitchers Discussion Did 43 feet ruin the game?

I remember some stats out of Florida, because I think they went to 43 before we did. 1.6 runs a game difference between the transition years. I will stay with my original thoughts..The great pitchers will still be great, the good ones will still be good and the bad ones will still be bad.

It is a non-issue down here. Sammy is right, the good pitchers are still good and the good hitters still can hit. I was trying to find the stat on the runs per game - but your number sounds right. I can see the teams with weaker pitching giving up a ton more runs, and honestly - there is a ton of weak pitching. For the life of me I don't know why ASA doesn't move 14u back to 43. I asked the JO down here and their stance is that there are so many 12 and 13year olds pitching in 14u that simply aren't pysically ready for it. The 14's that are throwing in HS are different I guess.

I like that ASA stays at 40 feet for 14U.

I think their idea is to get the girls ready for college and elite level ball. Not to get them ready to be decent HS players. So why move it back? And speed is a big part of that equation.

Also, 14U girls that are pitching in HS are maybe the top 2-5%? So why change the rules for such a small percentage of players.

You are blaming 40 runs on 3 extra feet? I`d say it was poor pitching and decent hitting and possibly poor fielding.. Probably would have been a similar score from 40 feet.
Right on!
Anytime there's that many runs between two teams, there has to be more to it than the distance of the mound. The statement above is right on! Bad pitching, good hitting , or a mixture of both.

If you watch a ton of softball and I do. I think it has made the short game and defense more important. Now at an ASA 18U qualifier this weekend, a team faced a very good pitcher and they attacked her by going small ball. I think they scored 15 runs in extra innings with only one hit in the green. Even at the state D2 high school , great pitching ( all going to pitch in college) more runs scored. Most high school coaches have stated it has added more offense. I have noticed more bunts back to the pitcher for hits , that the batter can now beat out. Three feet doesn't sound like much, but when you have kids as fast as today and the emphasis on small ball it does change the game.
