From Cindy Bristow:

Choking and Panicking are completely different. The author, Malcolm Gladwell in "What the Dog Saw" does a great job describing the difference. "Choking is about thinking too much. Panic is about thinking too little. Choking is about loss of instinct. Panic is reversion to instinct. They may look the same, but they are worlds apart." Choking involves a tensing up or tightening under pressure, usually of the neck and jaw, hence the name Choking. While Panicking is a bit different - it's the abandonment of everything an athlete has trained to do and instead tries to rely on instinct. This is the flight / fight response so often seen in sports. An athlete seemingly just loses control and panic sets in.
