Disappointment....

Maybe they simply don't enjoy it any longer. It's a big time commitment for a girl who doesn't really like to play or who would rather get a job to earn some spending money or money for college.

It was a Dragon Type Animal. The closest thing I can think of is one of those Dragons you see dancing in the street during the Chinese New Year celebrations. I don't think they actually changed the mascot - just the nickname. There's a small pic here.... http://www.akronschools.com/schools/home/pages/?schId=10647&linkId=History&pageTitle=History

In this case I'm glad that political correctness won out. That had to be the STUPIDEST name ever. (though, I'm sure there're others names that are just as ignorant).

I am curious though, what was the mascot?

Sorry, but IMO our society has pushed being "PC" completely over the top. Whatever happened to a good combination of thick skin and a sense of humor? I'll tell you what happened - they both went away... just like music on MTV.

and Saturday morning cartoons.
and car windows that go down by turning a crank.
and telephones that have a cord going into the wall.
and NBA players without a tattoo.

I would agree with PC gone overboard. But, can you imagine how horrified I would of been wearing "oriental" on my jersey if my parent should of moved there? It's funny now, but I don't think I would of laughed once I started speaking English. Wouldn't of known any better when I got off the boat initially.

Just so everyone knows, they could of kept on calling themselves orientals. I'm just gla my parents didn't LAN there when we cam here. LOL.

One reason I can think of is a bad HS coach. Not necessarily talking about bad as instruction goes but bad with how the player is treated. What if it's a HS coach that completely takes the enjoyment out of the game?

I woiuld think a collegiate coach would be curious as to why a girl didn't play high school softball. They may beleive that she doesnt get along well with other players and/or coaches. Why not humble yourself, play anyway, and take the attutude of trying to help your teammates improve and making your coach look good. It certainly couldnt hurt AND the player still learns a life lesson at the same time. They cant play anywhere else anyway until ghigh school is over.

Do you have some sort of evidence to support this statement??

I do not think you will find much evidence to support it.

Sad to hear so many deciding not to go out especially after a winning season. May be more to the story.

The majority I would say 80% of High school players do not plan on playing softball in college... The players that are on Summer teams only make up 10 to 15% of the players going out for the sport. These will be the players looking to play at the next level and they will generally be going out for the HS team.At our school we had 52 at tryouts only 6 played travel ball.

Most are playing because they played in the local leagues with the girls and it is something different than track. Others play ****** or Basketball as their main sport and it is something to do in the spring.

SAD, we went to the D4 Final Four as well, but we have the opposite problem; the number of girls trying out this year has doubled. We lost two seniors, but all returning players are coming back AFAIK. We do have our coaching staff coming back, so I'm sure that has something to do with it.

I really wish we had that problem. How many players do you keep from that? Do you make more than one JV or Freshman team?

Well good luck to you again this year. I just hope we can compete in our league this year with all the drama between these girls! This school is something else!!

Wow! We are a small D2 school and only get 20-22 girls trying out each year. Always trying to have a JV, but not usually a reality after some lose interest.
