Division 1 tryouts

I've noticed from various teams websites, OSU, Michigan, ect. that they hold open tryouts for the softball teams in the fall for registered students. Can anyone tell me if any girls ever "make the team" from these tryouts or are the schools just fullfilling some type of NCAA requirement by holding them? I've always been under the impression that the big programs fill the rosters by recruiting alone.

HOCKEYBUCKEYE: I was told by a D1 coach last weekend that is looking at my daughter
that she has 24 players on her roster this year because of the injuries she had last year. Of those 24 6 were walkons and two were player managers. She said that 4 of those 8 were players she picked up at tryouts. All played in high school and had various amounts of travel experience. She made it pretty clear to me that those girls would only get time in emergency situations.

a college coach in Ohio picked up a player at tryouts last year that ended up being a starting player and this year will have some scholarship money I believe. She was a very good player that thought she didn't want to play travel ball. After being in school a year, she decided she missed softball and went to the tryouts without even talking to the coach beforehand. The coach said she was surprised to see how good the player was and didn't know about her. They took her as a walk-on. Another player got injured and she got the shot at the position early in the year and did a great job. My dd and I were at a school that just held open tryouts also for their students. They said they expected to pick up a couple from the tryouts.
