Do you/Don't you want to know?

While I do believe coaches/organizations should be honest about what they need and/or are looking for, I think if the position(s) played is important to a player/family, that they should ask the coach what they anticipate once they are offered a spot. As semperfi states, coaches don't have a lot of time/info to evaluate this and things can change so a good coach prefers players who are flexible, but they should also understand if a prospective player wants to have a good idea, no different than an employee being hired at a company about what they will be doing. And as Julie says, honesty is always the best policy because it doesn't do anyone any good if the player/family are unhappy later.

I am guessing they need a backup and are letting any player that is interested know that her playing time will be limited. Some girls are determined to play for a certain team and may be happy with that chance to become an important part of the team as the season goes on. Not a situation I would want my dd to be in, but sometimes people just want to be able to say they play for a certain team. Prestige maybe.

True. I agree that is not a gig that I would be looking for my DD to be in (if she was that young again:)).

A fun little blurb about being "versatile". I don't think "Jordo" would mind me using her as an example :). She was recruited as a pitcher on my DD's team, and wound up in the outfield as a starter, and a darned good one at that! I believe she's back splitting pitching this year - we'll see. The key is simply being an excellent athlete with a super attitude - and NO ONE beats Jordo in the attitude department! She's ready to help the team - whatever it takes.

Yes once you made a team you have to continue to strive to be the best at your position or lose it. We also had a situation where she was taken on the team as position A and position B was secondary but by time may rolled around those rolls reversed. And has made her a better player. We were just leary of the offer that the coach wouldnt pin point anything. Had 10 returning players and kept saying she was versatile and could be put anywhere. That to us sounded like when we need to we will throw in anywhere. Not really learning any positions in particular.

We did let our returning girls know that we want them back, but still asked them to tryout so other girls trying out can see the talent level and energy, and so that they can even get a possible opportunity to meet each other. Understand also that even though we ask girls back, we don't demand an immediate answer and they are certainly allowed to try out for other teams if they so choose, so we don't necessarily know 100% if a player or two may leave and what positions we will need. With that being said, I do believe in posting on our tryout thread what positions it looks like we will need.

Well said.
