Do You Know Where You're Headed?

Most softball players and coaches dedicate quite of bit of time to softball each week. In fact, you may even fall into the category of spending a "ton" of time on softball when you're in season. However, it's surprising how often players or coaches train, compete, and spend hours of their time on this game with only the vague purpose of having fun or wanting to "get better." It almost boggles my mind how much time and energy some commit to softball without really giving much thought to exactly what they want to accomplish this season or even over the course of the next 2-3 seasons.

Are you one of those people? Think about it. If I asked you right now to tell me where you want to be softball-wise at the end of this season, what would you tell me? How specific would your answer be? Do you even know what your first and biggest goal would be? If you only accomplished ONE thing, what would you want it to be? Is it a hitting goal or a defensive goal? Is it a speed and agility goal or softball skills goal? Is it more of a personal goal or one for the team you're on?

If you're not sure and can't answer any of those questions with any certainty in less than 30 seconds, don't feel bad. You're not alone and I'm going to help you do something about that right now.

Is it really that important to do all that thinking and know all that stuff?
Before we get into the details of all that, let's talk about why it's so important.

You probably wouldn't get in your car and start driving without first knowing where you want to go. Right?
If you would, then go ahead and stop reading right here.

If not, read on?

Imagine if you live in California and just start driving "somewhere," what are the chances you'll actually end up in a place you really want to be? If you live in California and KNOW you want to get to Las Vegas, however, you have a much better chance of actually ending up exactly where you want to be and quicker than if you just got in your car and started driving without a specific destination in mind.

Well guess what? The same is true with your softball journey! How can you end up where you want to be next month or at the end of the season or at the end of next season if you have no specific destination in mind?

Do you have a vision of where you want to be at the end of this season or next? Do you know what your BIG softball dreams are? Do you have a clear, specific, detailed idea of what you want to accomplish? Or are you wandering around just trying to become a "better" softball player?

If not, now is as good a time as any to sit down and figure it out. Get out a piece of paper and a pen or pencil (or simply open up a word processing document on your computer) and just start jotting down your biggest softball dreams. After you've listed a bunch of "stuff" go through it and choose your Top 5 softball wants (or 10 if you're feeling ambitious).

Once you have your top picks chosen, the ones that really, REALLY matter to you most, get more specific about them. What exactly do you want to do and when do you want to do it by?

Make your list and keep it in a place you'll see it often. Tape it next to your mirror in the bathroom. Take a picture of it on your phone and set it as your wall paper. Post it on the door of your refrigerator. You get the idea. Just put it somewhere you're reminded of it daily. Put your softball dream list up in multiple places if you have to. Having your goals and dreams IN sight constantly will help you make the best choices you need to get you there on a daily basis!

Just wanted to say thank you for posting this, after a long weekend reading this post helped me put things back into perspective. I really appreciate it, I hope others will read this and remember why we as coaches and mgrs do what we do year after year.

It's not the destination, it's the journey.

But good post. I appreciate your perspective. :)

Blatz-boy....Good post regardless of where it came, can't imagine you intended to do anything other than make people think a bit. My 2nd oldest DD's 16u team did this before breaking for school ball. Players received goals generated by their coach and talked to their coach's about what they had for expectations. Good stuff.

A lot of time I do. I don't take credit for anything like this. Next time I will use the proper APA College approved citation just to make you happy. :)

It would make me happy too. I love the posts and would like a link to original articles when possible. Thanks

I agree with WM63. The materials posted by Strohbro are very inspiring, but proper credit needs to be given. Proper doesn't need to be some formal APA citation. I believe that OFC, now known as the Softball Zone, is at some risk for copyright or other intellectual property rights violation for unattributed posts, especially other posts that say "I" did something when the "I" is never identified.

Again, I love reading the stuff that Strohbro posts. But a link to the original source is a much safer way to get this information to us other than simply posting without even including some quotation marks.

Not to mention that it's a little rich for Strohbro to silently accept praise from someone (for example, from earlier in the thread - "I appreciate your perspective") and then act offended when someone points out that the perspective wasn't even his. I would have expected some contrition.

@29dad:

Your point is another thing that has disturbed me. On several of the threads, not just this one, that Strohbo has created, people have responded with admiration for the substance of the initial thread, but there has been no acknowledgement from Strohbro of the fact that someone else was the original author. For a while there I thought he (or she) was actually addressing softball players in a clinic setting, which is what one of the posts implied.

I don't think Strohbro is a bad person but I do think Strohbro should have been more upfront about the source of the posts/thread. I hope he (or she) continues to post, just with proper links to the original source.

No APA needed of course. Just credit. I know you aren't trying to take credit for the information but it is just good form. Additionally people may want to read more from wherever it is that it came from.

There you go then, Stroh... linking your source will halt all that and keep everything above water. Several people appreciate the threads and would like to know more.

Ok .. I am confused.. how are there 2 strohbro's?

The account that started this thread shows as guest? what is that?

Mark - the only strohbro I know is here: http://www.thesoftballzone.com/vb3/ohio-asa-tournaments/44089-12u-asa-states-hamilton.html Jr account - not sure how since he has been on OFC for years.. but notice the linkable name to his profile.. what gives?

It appears the profile used to start this thread was subsequently deleted, hence guest, and a new one started on March 6.

Mark, make sure you include the tradmark !

Come on people. If you know Mark you know hes lucky to get the thread posted let alone try to do any malicious. This can be a innocent mistake, no need to imply it was for false praise.
