If runner had crossed the plate before the out was made at third then the run should have counted.

SECTION 61 of NFHS Softball Rule Book:
A timing play is a play when the last out of an inning is not the result of a force out and the exact time of the out may or may not allow a run to score. If a runner should touch home base an instant before the last out (which is not a force out) is made, then the run would be scored. If a runner should touch home base an instant after the last out then no run would be scored.

There's something un-American about LADY_KNIGHTS being a Junior Member and having 8 posts!

Yes run counts. Only way it doesn't is force play or fly ball...

Doh!

Umpires need to always be aware of a potential timing play. With two outs and runners on base, you have to anticipate this and get in position to see the runner crossing the plate and the runner being played upon on the bases.

I know that early in my career I got caught out of position and missed one of these. Heck, I've seen this call botched in Major League Baseball a couple of times! For the umpire, you can only hope that it was a learning experience and he'll be watching next time. It doesn't come up all that often. I see maybe one or two of these a season, about once every 50-60 games on average.
