Earning a High School Letter

I hate to waste a thread on this topic, but I don't know the answer, and I'm sure half of the OFC'ers do....

When my daughter goes to high school, is the standards for earning a letter in a varsity sport set by the school, or by OHSAA? Is there a way to find what the requirements are? (Short of calling the A.D. and instantly becoming a high maintenance parent?)

I believe you have to play in 1/2 of the total innings for the season.

It details how to earn a varsity letter by each sport in the athletic handbook/student handbook at our school, so I don't know if it is mandated by the state or by each individual school district

I know at my dd's High School it was 21 varsity innings, so it must be determined by the school and AD. We always had a Sports Meeting at the beginning of the year and they handed out the Student Athlete Handbook which had the code of conduct and the requirements for the various sports for lettering.

Its the coach He/she determines how they award Varsity Letters. I am sure ADs at most schools have some input.

Definitely coaches and/or school, not OHSAA. If its not in the handbook, I'd recommend waiting to find out after the fact ... nothing you can really do about it ...

Every sport is different,,, but also if she only plays the last several games and was a huge asset to the team i have seen many coaches give the player the letter

I'm a proud father of 4 student athletes. My two oldest daughters got their letters as freshman. We had secretly bought their jackets prior to the banquet so they could wear them with the letter the next day to school. It was a great moment for both of them.
Each coach has different criteria and can bypass the criteria

i believe each coach and each school is different and it is predetermined based on innings played

Most schools have their particular requirements listed in the student-athlete handbook.

I don't think it's a dumb question. Many of us have questions we're afraid to ask. I'm glad you did.

While I have no doubt that a lot of schools base it on innings played, one would think that a role player (e.g., DH, runner) who was with the team all season would still earn a letter. I mean, would you deny a football kicker a letter because he didn't play enough minutes? At our school, we essentially looked at it like that anyone who was with us half the season or more, regardless how much they played or what they did deserved a letter.
