Question: Our school finds itself in the midst of a money crunch. As a result it appears that our school will go to a pay to participate plan. Rumor has it that it might be in the neighborhood of $800  If a student decides to open enroll to another district, are they required to sit out one year or is there a provision for such actions? I know if they did away with sports all together there is no waiting period but I am not sure about the pay to participate thing. I know the knowledgable folks here at OFC will have the answer. Thanks.

I would suggest calling the OHSAA to get that info. Nothing against the answers you might get here, but when it comes to something that important, better to get it from the source. JMHO

If your DD is currently a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior and she open enrolls into another school district she will have to sit out 1 year. She would be elegible the following year. If she is currently in Jr. High and she open enrolls she would not have to wait a year.

In order to avoid the 1 year waiting period if she open enrolls, you would have to open enroll into the school district prior to the beginning of the school year and also move into that school district. Most schools have a deadline for open enrollment. There may be an exception if she enrolls into a private school.

I would contact the AD of the schools involved. The OHSAA may not answer your questions. If you go on their web stie there is a section in one of the drop down menues that answers elegiblility questions.

It is my understand that OHSAA no longer responds to inquiries. If so, garner what you can from their website and contact the AD at your school.

The OHSAA will not answer your questions, because they do not take calls from the public. ?All questions have to go through a school official, usually your AD.

I have read the OHSAA bylaws numerous times and have read in there BOC meeting minutes, they make very few, if any exceptions to the transfer rules. ?Long story short, your stuck, unless you physically move out of the district, and into a new one.

Wow $800.00 is quite a price tag! To play one sport? Ashland is currently at $75.00 for the first sport; $50 for the second sport and $35.00 for the third. I don't know who could come up with that kind of $$ for high school sport!

OHSAA is very vague regarding transfers. They spell it out very clearly then add numerous reasons of why somebody would be allowed to play the very next year. I bet if you pressed hard enough, you would be able to play without sitting out a year.

Page 47 Section 7, you will get a crash course on CYA by OHSAA lol ;D

our school also has the pay to participate, but our sports are being ran by booster parents because our school took away our sports . we have to pay $375 a sport and we have to have parents drive us to and from games. this will be the third year we are doing this.

Parents having to run sports programs because the public school isn't able to do the job is a crying shame!!! I don't think voters truly understand what they are doing to their communities when they short change their children.
Still, this is an excellent example of "where there is a will, there is a way." I imagine this team is very dedicated.

Another angle to check, see if your school is in the poor performing schools list, that is a legit reason to transfer.
