Equal opportunitys for girls and boys?

Just a question for the pros does a school have to provide equal opportunity for the girls in softball that they do for the boys in baseball? What I am refering to is can they hold out the girls from open gym while the boys team are permitted to practice for over a month in a gym. If they are not allowed to do this who do we report this to? Just curious what our daughters rights actually are I don't want to go in with empty guns when I approach the AD.

Next how would you handle it?

don't know the answer, but I am very curious in what others have to say. This is a very interesting topic.

Same opportunities would be the same opportunity I would think personally.

I was reading about a college in Charleston, West Virginia that a past student went after them about the softball fields... and the college was forced into building a new one and co-oped with the City itself to build one heck of a nice park.

I'd contact OHSAA actually to get the answer before I went after the AD. That way you are prepared for any BS that might come back from the school.

I would speak to the coach first.....find out what the real situation is. Maybe the coach just doesn't want to have many open gyms. You don't want to go to the AD or principal with something that the coach should be dealing with. If the coach is aware that the program is being treated unfairly, then it is time to go to AD and principal.

If that is true.... The statement you said above, then the answer is NO! Be VERY careful about "screaming" Title IX. If you file a Title IX lawsuit when they come in to investigate the so called problem.....They will investigate your whole athletic program. It is not just a simple softball vs. baseball issue. Are they treated equal? They will look at every program at your school.... Title IX is a VERY strong trump card.... If you decide to use it make sure you are very detailed on the exact alligation(s) you are making against that program or school!

Make sure you have documentation for everything you want to bring forth in your lawsuit!!! Best of Luck and let us all know how things turn out....

Here is a link that helps explain Title IX.

First go to the AD. Then the Principal. Then the Superintendent.

I would go to the AD but if that didn't work I would email the Principal, Super and every School Board Member. Always bring in the ELECTED Board Members for results. But as someone else said, get the story from the coach to see if the boys are getting preferential treatment first.

You're right Bill. I forgot to put the coach as the first person to talk to.

When there is a statement/announcement made at school, as in society, by the time is eventually makes it to your ears at the house, what was initially said is so distorted or changed from it's original form that what you eventually are told at home could be factual or could be fictional. So it is best to always check with the original source.

Be very careful here. Make sure that the problem isn't something simple like the softball coach hasn't scheduled the conditioning or that he/she has a job the precludes that scheduling. Get you facts very straight before you have a discussion with an AD/principle/school board . Your kid (s) will suffer.

Make certain that this is a fight you want to fight before you even hint at it. The school district will protect itself and its own in a knee jerk reaction and it will bury you.

We all have seen this type of subtle and not-so-subtle discrimination. The baseball team has 3 coaches, the softball 2. Baseball plays of groomed district owned fields and softball plays on community fields. Baseball has the prime practice times and softball takes what is left over. Football has 7 coaches and softball has..... You get the picture.

A title IX action will take years to work it's way through the system. It may be worth it in the long run but if you are looking for a real solution this year you need to work the system. Everyone is aware of what a Title IX suite might mean and the threat of it is stronger that the actual suite. You will get very little support from the male sports because a typical solution is to remove the advantage that you cite. (i.e. Reduce 3 coaches to 2)

However, first check your facts through every back channel you can find. Find out why the situation exists, and then try to help them come up with a solution. Good Luck

Ask questions, document answers, and get documents....Basics of prelitigation investigation. The other answers on here are all well thought out and right. I would therefore only reiiterate that swinging the Title IX hammer is like..dropping a nuke, poisoning the well....pick your own cliche. If your answer after step 1 is that boys are boys and to heck with the girls, THEN consider carefully step 2. If you need more prelitigation info, PM me. I've danced in that rodeo before...

No it isn't equal and it NEVER will be. Even if the softball team is the best in the state and the baseball team is a disgrace, they will still get precident over softball anyday. It sukks, but it has been that way since I was a kid. It is the same in college too so be prepared. When I was at Kent, we won the MAC and went to the College World Series. The football team was a joke, but we regularly got bumped from the fieldhouse and the weight room so they could get in extra work. They definately needed the work, but it was still rediculous. Equal treatment would be great, but it will never happen.

Yeah no coach worth his salt would bow to the boys baseball team. They are no more important than the girls softball team. Start with the coach. If he tells you he was not given gym rights by the AD, go to the AD then the Principle then ............

I would want to know why aren't the girls allowed to use one of the schools other Gymnasiums. There are gyms for the middle and elementary school-why can't the girls have access to those gym's? Or just divide the Gym into 1/2-1/2 for the girls and 1/2 for the boys versus telling the girls no.

Agreed, if it were fair, many or all of the talented girls in the NPF would have inked multi-million dollar contracts to go along with the multi-million dollar endorsement deals just like thier baseball counterparts.

Thats not a good comparison. Football brings in Millions of dollars even when they can't win a game..So yes they will get better treatment..Look at The Buckeyes Football stadium 107,000 fans, most if not all are season ticket holders, times 5 to 7 home games a year. How many fans go watch OSU Softball games, Maybe a thousand or 2

That too is a bad comparison. NPF does not have 80,000 seat stadiums, nor do they play 162 game season. Plus they don't yet have the merchandise sales like MBL does...In fact i would bet in the NPF the girls make a larger percentage of the total team owners gross income, then the players in MBL do.... Look at it this way you could by the Akron Racers for probably less then $500,000. The Yankies would set you back one and a quarter BILLON even the Indains would cost 3/4 of a BILLION

Spoke with the coach and apparently they are comfortable with the decision and we will have to honor their decision. Just grateful for the travel practices and the other facilities that I have secured to put dd through the paces.

My first thought when I read your post is "maybe the softball coach is lame and used this as an excuse to get out of working with his team". Just speculating....
