SoCal, I noticed that California does not have a State Championship for softball (as well as some other sports). But they do it for sports such as cross country and golf. What is the rationale behind that? Is winning a CIF Section as far as you can go? How many CIF Sections are there? Sorry to go off topic, but, I have always wondered about this.

It will be quite interesting to see how Elyria and Keystone fare against each other this year. Wellington has developed a good program as well as Columbia. I can only hope Firelands gets back to where it was in the 90s when they were battling Keystone every year for the conference title, but I fear they are still a couple years away still.

Are Keystone and Elyria playing each other this year? I checked the posted Prebis Memorial schedule and didn't see them facing each other....are they meeting at the Kenton County Classic in Kentucky?

I don't know if they're on each other's schedule. It seems like they managed to play each other during the season in the last few years.

philbob- you are right- they have in years past. I would like to see them play each other again this year....maybe at the Wendy's Classic?

Brownsfan- we are lucky to have such talent (Lorain County) nearby. Poland, Elyria, and Keystone, will be playing at the Prebis Memorial this year...would have like to have seen Perry as well.

There are 10 Sections - 6 in the NorCal Region and 4 in SoCal.

The only Spring sports with a State Championship are boys golf and track & field. They can easily get them in before the end of school because they don't require multiple rounds of games for Section and Region Championships.

Softball only goes to Section Championships and our Southern Section is huge - 567 schools, 800k students and 171k square miles. Championship games are the 1st weekend in June - that doesn't leave much time to hold multiple rounds of games for Region and State Championships. I guess they could fit it in if they reduced the number of teams that qualify and compressed the playoff schedule.

Note: Football has a committee that chooses the teams for the State Championship games from the Section Champions.

How do these top 50 schools, including Ohio play so many games? The Ohio schools are getting in 30-32 while a school in Michigan had 44, a Tennessee school got in 54 while another racked up 65! They must be playing a fall schedule, perhaps double headers maybe weekends and southern trips. How do these kids stay in school?

In Ohio you have 27 regular season games that God, er I mean OHSAA allows. Mother Nature always takes a few back though. Add 2 sectionals, 2 districts, 2 regionals, & 2 states and you could possibly play 35 games if you don't have a bye in the sectionals.

3 Ohio schools made ESPN's Fab 50 Preseason National Rankings (http://rise.espn.go.com/softball/team-rankings/2011/Week-1.aspx) and a 4th was listed on the bubble.

Rank School (City, State) Record 2010
21 Poland Seminary (Poland, Ohio) 30-2
33 Elyria (Elyria, Ohio) 24-6
36 Perry (Massillon, Ohio) 26-3

On The Bubble: Keystone (LaGrange, Ohio) 25-5

I heard that Keystone's pitcher from last year moved to Elyria for this year. If true, I wonder how that will effect Keystone. I know they are usually in the top 10 in DII.

Yes one of the pitchers left for Elyria. Good thing Keystone has several other pitchers to go to, one of whom just signed D1 MAC and is a junior.

I might be wrong, I have been in the past:D, but I believe that signing before the end of your junior year is a major NCAA violation. It could be that she has verbally committed.

It all makes for exciting HS softball. Hopefully all of the girls will stay healthy and able to strut their stuff.

http://www.wendysspringclassic.com/ 2009 results Keystone - Elyria

http://www.wendysspringclassic.com/ 2008 results. I normally go each year and you get a good idea who is the better team playing some very good teams from others parts of the country.

Here are the actual links:

http://www.wendysspringclassic.com/2008 Game Order.htm

SELECTION CRITERIA

NOTE: Only teams with exceptional strength of returning pitching qualify for consideration. Teams are appraised by a selection committee on a year-to-year basis. An invitation to the Wendy's Spring Classic is a reward for a successful season, with the same high expectations for the following season, and must never be construed as a multi-year agreement. Additionally, selected local schools will be awarded invitations in recognition of their program's tradition and loyal fan base.

The typical order for consideration of a qualified invitee is:

1. State champions/Runners-up
2. Schools listed in the national Fab 50 rankings by StudentSportsSoftball.com
3. Regional qualifiers
4. League champions

The Board of Directors of the Wendy's Spring Classic cannot offer any compensation, so a team desiring to play in this event must be totally committed to fundraising projects, or be self-sufficient. Because of this, the Selection Committee will meet in June and extend invitations as soon as possible.
