DD was playing last night. She was our 2nd pitcher. We lost a game we NEVER should have lost.

Our starting pitcher and my dd both were struggling. Some, with throwing bad pitches. The majority, with bad calls. Threw quite a few balls that looked like they were over the corners, but were called balls. Soooo, one of our coaches walked behind the backstop to watch, and sure enough, they were strikes being called balls.

I guess that's what you get when playing teams that hire teenage umps who don't play ball, have most likely never played ball, and figure it's an easy $30. We lost by 1 run. Ugh.

Just had to vent.

Oh, and I had to hear from dd all the way home, how badly she "socks". Heartbreaking

Not sure how long your DD has been playing, but my advice is get off the roller coaster you just got on :lmao: There are going to be games like that, dont let it get to you. Never to high or to low, its never as bad as it seems nor is it ever as good as it seems :lmao:

This is her 3rd year playing, but her first year pitching. Let me tell you, it's gut-wrenching! I don't know how all you veterans have sat and watched dd's pitch and not thrown up! It was all good before she started pitching. I could sit and watch the game calmly and complain with all the other parents. Now, I'm on the edge of my seat, wringing my hands, feeling nauseous every time she pitches.

Honestly crystlemc if you are that nervous over rec ball you have bigger problems ahead in travel ball. Travel ball will keep you on the edge of your seat all the time, in most cases. Nothing like rec ball at all, not even a good comparison.

Yep. Rec ball. Trying out for a travel team next week.

LOL....nervous about rec ball.....LOL....Just wait till your DD pitches against a team that has 4 or 5 D1 recruits on it, and the rest going D2......rec ball, thanks for the laugh.

Cut me some slack guys. I'm just nervous for her because I want her to do well. Not nervous about the games themselves...lol.

Glad I could provide amusement.

She will do well crystlemc. Remember though, a kid senses when her parents are nervous and therefore she does not play at her top level. Stay relaxed, especially around her, and enjoy the games. You will have way more fun now that you are going into travel ball and then you will wonder why you even did rec ball. I was not making fun of you or cracking on rec ball before but it is a time where kids get to play with thier close friends and have fun whether they win or lose and travel is time to learn how to play all parts of the game and become a great player while making friends along the way.

The funny thing about her rec team is that she is the oldest on her team by 6 months, tallest by 6 inches. Everyone is a grade or more below her...lol. We joke that she plays in Munchkinland... She's trying out for travel because I feel it will raise the bar for her and make her play her best. She gets kinda lazy playing with this team. Plus, she has been asking to play travel for the last year. When my step-daughter played travel, she made so many new friends from all over Ohio (on her teams) and all over the country from the tourneys. I want that experience for my other dd's. I remember how much more exciting step-dd's games were.

I know you weren't bagging on me. I just kinda had to chuckle.

Hang in there. Don't think we are all like this person. Travel sounds like just what the doctor ordered. Good luck

Hey now I resent that about teenagers calling rec games. My dd does that for her summer job.

OK, just kidding. My dd use to catch, so she has an idea of what your talking about. Anything close, and she calls a strike. Now, what's funny, is seeing her expression when she is the ump on the field and watching the home ump call balls strikes and strikes balls. It makes her frustrated. One game, they literally switched.

Once again, I had to have fun on the first sentence. :D

Let's go back to your original complaint.

As a pitcher's parent, you need to remember this one thing.........

Every person at the ball park has their own definition of what the strike zone should be. The only one that matters is the strike zone that the plate umpire is calling. It is up to the pitcher and batter to figure it out and take advantage of it. It is part of the game.

Hopefully the umpire had the same strike zone for both teams and that it remained consistent throughout the game.

Just kick back and relax. Oh yeah, one more thing....no, you cannot call the pitches!!!:D (when you get to travel ball, you'll understand this one)

Hey crystlemc,

I can sympathize completely. When my DD started pitching in travel ball I sometimes found myself drifting out toward the outfield fences when she was struggling in a game. And I was an assistant coach!!! Now, a few years later, things are much better. When she pitches well, its hugs all around. When she struggles........I yank her butt out of there!

The strike zone was not consistent and that was part of the problem. Our coach at one point, told him it was okay to make those calls, as long as they went both ways. They didn't.

I'm not bashing teenage umps. I did it for the younger girls when I was in HS ball. I am annoyed by teenage umps who have never picked up a ball. The one we had last week, admitted that he had never played ball a day in his life. I know that is the nature of rec ball. Doesn't make it any less frustrating.

WV, if by calling pitches, you mean to my dd.... hopefully she and her catcher will be smart enough and taught well enough to call their own game. If you mean "suggestive selling" to the ump... well... c'mon! You're taking all the fun out of it... :lmao:

I'm guessing this will be me. Removing myself from the situation. That way i don't stress her out unnecessarily.
