Game, site illegal, task force reports

VANDALIA | Authorities raided a poker tournament Saturday and confiscated $8,000 in cash and gambling materials, saying the event and its location did not meet legal requirements for charitable gambling events.
No arrests were made and no charges have been filed, said Sgt. Dave Hale, a supervisor with the organized crime task force of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's deputies, aided by Vandalia police and the Ohio Attorney General's Office, seized the cash along with evidence including playing cards, gambling chips and tally sheets, Hale said.
About 60 people were playing in the Texas Hold 'Em tournament to raise money for a softball team, Hale said.
Investigators believe the card players and softball team were unaware of the legal problems of the event, Hale said.
The raid took place at the Celebrations Banquet Center, 3119 Stop Eight Road, behind the Fraternal Order of Police lodge that serves as a union hall for Montgomery County sheriff's deputies, Hale said. The sheriff's office has nothing to do with the operation of the FOP hall, and officers and FOP members had no knowledge of the poker event, he said.
Investigators believe the softball team that was to benefit from the poker tournament does not qualify as a charitable organization under federal tax law, Hale said. The banquet hall, which is rented for special events, does not qualify to host a charitable gambling event as a church or other organization could under federal tax law, Hale said.
Officers will work with the county prosecutor's office, which could take the evidence before a grand jury within a month, he said.
