After a disturbing sight Sat.morning at the Heart of Ohio tournament, one of our girls hit a line drive which caught the third baseman in the face. After a ambulance ride,a broken nose and a swollen shut eye as well as the bloody uniform and field, the team went and bought game faces(a little late). The Heart of Ohio Nitro 10u,Ohio Stingrays,Ohio Classics and The Ohio Ice are encouraging teams and tournaments to enforce the infields to were game faces. We hear about stories every year and we all need to do everything possible to protect these young ladies. All of the above mentioned teams are asking for the support of other organizations to help enforce the issue and pass the word.

Sincerely
The Heart of Ohio Nitro
The Ohio Stingrays
The Ohio Classics
The Ohio Ice

you can count the ENTIRE Static organization in on this one!!!! Who has some pull with these TD's...? Shoot, we've had coaches get facial damage at practice.

Please let us know how she is doing, our prayers are out with her!!!

The Ohio Hurricanes (formally Tri-County Hurricanes) had an experience this past weekend at the Sunraze tournament. Our Pitcher was wearing her Rip it mask when a extremly hard line drive came back and "Ripped" her mask off her face. It could have been tragic had she not been wearing her mask. This should have been on video and Gameface or Rip it could have used this for a commercial. Our Pitcher was fine. She didnt even have a headache that night. We (coaches and Parents) attribute this to the gameface-Rip it. Without it she would have sustained major injury. The Hurricanes have been wearing them for about 2 years now and after this we saw alot more teams at this tourney walkin in Sunday morning w/ masks! Hope your Player is feeling well!

Statistics:

One weekend.
Five tournaments.
250 teams.
850 games.
2,450 balls hit to 3rd base.
one broken nose.

Kids still have a much better chance of getting hurt in a car wreck on the way to the game, or of slipping in the shower after the game, or of getting violently ill from eating tainted hot dogs. Should they not ride in cars? Not take showers? Not eat hot dogs?

More statistics:

---t happens.
---t will happen again.

next time the ball could hit her in the rib cage, the knee, the collar bone, the pelvis, the elbow or the neck. Perhaps we should dress our little girls in suits of armor. Clank, clank.

Lester - Taking the approach of the "TD's" is a good one...

IMHO - The kids and teams that are heavy into travel ball are virtually "self policed". They know the speed of this game. I can't remember a time when 1st, 3rd, or Pitcher was not wearing a mask (experienced team).
Where I see the problem is with the teams that are just breaking into the travel scene. I really don't think they understand or recognize the risk and speed of this game... This is where the TD's can help.... and make at a minimum the 3 position mentioned above mandatory.

Two weeks ago in Greenville we saw 2 or 3 teams not wearing masks... I mentioned it to the teams and the Umpire.... and got similar responses as mentioned on this and other threads "No, she is fine" and "It's her choice" All I could do was pray the inevitable wouldn't happen.... Sure enough just one week later, it has...

Can someone post a status on the DD who got hit?

Ultimately the Sanctioing Bodies will have to put this into their rules or equipment requirements just as they do for helmets, bats, etc. I can see this slowing the "process" down fore they will want NOCSAE approvals, testings, and standards written so they are protected. This could take years knowing what I have been trhought with techical committees and getting revisions to codes and standards.

Short term-TD's to enforce... Long term-Sanctioning Bodies to add to their equipment verbiage.
Or another approach is to get insurance companies to jump on board...

The one that was most disturbing was the pitcher standing behind a net during a slow-pitch home run derby, and he gets drilled in the face before he has a chance to retreat behind the net after the pitch. That was nasty - blood and teeth everywhere.

My DD is a pitcher/3B, and she absolutely refuses to wear a facemask at these positions - the most she'll do is wear the most expensive mouthpiece I could find. I need to line all these videos up and show her... or just not play her at those positions until she changes her mind - LF is looking good for her about now. ;-)

Re: Game faces essential

TRB
The last update that I received was a broken nose but wasn't sure about the orbital bone around the left eye due to swelling ,she was back at the field on Sun.to cheer on her team but may have to go back for more X-rays.

I feel your pain... my oldest DD is the same way. It's a fight everytime on the field. My youngest DD would wear it to school if she could. She loves the Rip-it!

At the district finals on Sat I witnessed the greenville pitcher getting hit at least 3 times, twice by the same batter, and saw an absolute bullit shot down the 3rd base line, theres not enough reaction time for the pitcher or 3rd ( when she plays where she should) I take my hat off to the greenville pitcher for wearing a game face, smart kid.

I hade 2 12u DDs that will sit the bench if they try to take the field without there gameface. My youngest is the catcher, so she usualy has a mask on but the oldest pitches. Her mom say NO GAMEFACE NO PITCH. In three tournaments this year she has tried once, never again. These young ladies dont understand guys dont dig scars, black eyes and broken noses. Protect your angel faces as long as you can.

Let the players and parents decide. Both my daughters have been pitchers and/or third base for years. They received several injuries during the game. The most serious was broken vertebrae. One daughter took a line drive to her chest at third base. Both daughters injured their ankles sliding into second base. One daughter was hit by wild pitches twice in the same game--one cracked a couple of ribs, and one chiped her shin bone.

I have done the emergency room scene with my daughters, and I still say that it needs to be the parent's/player's decision.

Face protection has become a necessary evil in this game, especially at the younger ages. I've said it before and I'll say it again.....the bats are way too hot and forgiving! Today's bats made of advanced metals and composites, utilizing a trampoline effect to catapult the ball off of the bat. Most younger kids are just not skilled enough to react to the speed of the ball coming off of the bat, and most coaches have the corner players playing about 20 feet up to protect against the bunt or slap. I agree with luvthegame; it should be a parent's decision, but I would highly recommend the use of face protection, especially for the pitcher and corner players.

Kids still have a much better chance of getting hurt in a car wreck on the way to the game, or of slipping in the shower after the game, or of getting violently ill from eating tainted hot dogs. Should they not ride in cars? Not take showers? Not eat hot dogs?

This post is STUPIDITY......would you put your kid in the middle of street and hope they don't get hit by a car? My daughter stands less than 35 feet from the batter once she releases the ball. It's the best $40 dollars I will ever spend. You can feel free to debate this but I won't be part of it.

Dumb post!!!
This is why we have seat belts, Bath mats, hot dogs are fully cooked! To help in the prevention of injury and illness. Game face and Rip its...help in the prevention of serious injury>\.

Thank you Truth. We don't hear these conversations about sons playing baseball, nor do we see any of their infielders wearing masks. Being a high level athlete always carries the danger of some injury (ankles and knees in ******, basketball, etc...) Let's treat our daughters like the athletes they are and not our "Darling Daughters" as delicate little beauty queens.

What are all these girls going to do when (if) they end up playing in college? I have yet to see a single girl in a college-level game wearing a mask.

My DD is a 12U player and decided on her own she would wear a Game face this year. I bought it for her last year, but she would not wear it. Over the last year I have had her read the posts about the injuries that could have been prevented with a Game face which I think had some impact and got her thinking about it. Before her first tournament this year she started to wear it. She pitched, played first and third this weekend and wore it at every position. She says it does not impede her at all. She is the only one on her team who wears it. I am not entirely sure why she decided to wear it this year, but I am glad. She does have a good friend who pitches and wears it and I think her friend's mom may have something to do with her decision to wear it!
