The 10U games were supposed to start at 9am this morning, and all games for the day were cancelled by 9:15am. We decided to stay in town and find something to do since we already were there, and saw that the rain had stopped by 10:15am. We later went by the 10U field at noon, and the field looked playable. The championship game between the lasers and dragons, looked about ready to go, as both teams were warming up. This was several hours BEFORE the scheduled time for the title game ! With those extra hours, they could have gotten in all the games scheduled... Throw in that they ran out of tournament t-shirts on Friday, and you have a tournament that was run poorly... I guess they got their money...

Can't control the weather. But you can control your money. $495 , pretty steep just to play softball. They also got parking fees on top of that. Just rename the tourney GAP$$;&

fpitchdad, she (Anna Lauterbach) did indeed hit 67, and 66. She pitched two innings in her last game, and the Saginaw Valley coach who was there for all of her games, had her hitting 66 3 or 4 times, and 67 twice in her last game. She is a 2012 graduate and is 6'2, 195 lbs. I know this first hand because she pitches for us.

I was really hoping to play today, because the more she throws the harder she throws, it takes her a good game or two to really get rolling. I can honestly say a few weeks ago, at Cranberry she was probably hitting real close to 70 in her 4th game of the day in the championship.

Solid two days for our girls, 4-0, jacked 7 homeruns in that span. Was really looking forward to playing this morning. Very, very disapointed in how the cancellation was handled. An hour of they cancelled at the middle school, it was super hot there, and the field was pretty close to dry.

Cut back game times, but to get in the younger games, and not the older ones, when its featured as a college showcase, is very upsetting to our parents. Before this morning I was very happy with the way tournament was run prior to cancellation. In a matter of 45 minutes, or 30, went from indefinite delay, to 2 hour delay to cancelled. Very puzzling on why no effort was made to condense game, or to take all your top seeds and play a play off, or I think there was 4 undefeated teams left, why not let them play. There really is no fair was, but some effort would have please our parents better than how it panned out. We'll be back, but I hope they learn from their mistakes, and just a bit of advice, try to keep the eighteens/sixteens together as close as possible. Several college coaches had trouble with construction, and length of travel between fields.

Connellsville (PA) Cyclones 18U:

13-0 over Central Ohio Ice (4 innings)
8-2 over Ohio Classics Black - Twiss
3-2 over Cincy Doom 95
10 - 0 over Buckeye Heat - McGhee (4 innings)

Seven dingers hit in four games, cumulative score of 34-4, the "first" number one pitcher clocked 66-67, and the "other" number one hitting 61-62. And, it wasn't the starting infield. The underclassmen were showcased.

It's a shame a couple of 12u/14u games couldn't have been deferred to at least let the undefeated teams decide it on the field, especially in a showcase. But it is what it is. Teams get to play four other teams out of 60, and somehow giving up 1 or 2 or 4 or 8 runs over four games is the indicator of who has the better team on a given day.

Congrats to the Ohio Classics Black and Lady Lasers Aqua for a fine tournament, and also to the Pittsburgh Power who went 4-0 in pool play. All excellent teams.

Lasers and Classics should think about coming to the Pittsburgh Power "Battle of the Burgh" tournament next year, it's a good tourney, and you'll find the Power and Cyclones there waiting for you and many other really good teams, who will give you a hard, fair game. You'll also get to meet the Phillipsburg Hurricanes from the State College area who can rock and roll with anyone this side of the Mississippi. The tournament at IUP is always a nice one too, the Maddogs have shown up there and mixed it up well the past couple of years. Fun stuff and good times always when you play the Maddogs.

As a PA parent of a travel player (who, BTW, will likely be starting for a university located in Ohio next spring), I guess I've got a little chip on my shoulder about some of the opinions whispered by some of our neighbors about PA ball. PA ball has come a long way in the last handful of years, and having two of the undefeated teams in pool play at GAPSS is evidence of that.

And while you're over here, you might be able to find another QB who can help you not lose the Rose Bowl!

for the sake of argument , and having played the Classics black last week and the Cyclones this week I'd give a strong edge to the Classics. IMO both the arms they threw at us were superior to the cyclones two . The talent in chicago was superior to what I saw at Gapss and the classics marched thru that field. 7 dingers is nice but there were balls flying out at a rapid pace on field 4 . I think fences were about 180. We hit 3 out in 5 games. and we are wee tiny 14u's. lol. (CF measured at 226 ft at one of the Middle schools where we played at , 1 of the homers was there) MD

MD - I can respect your opinions, and I'm not saying us (if anyone hasn't guessed, I'm a Cyclone) or anyone would have beaten Classics, Power, or Lasers. I'll also give the benefit of doubt on a couple of the homers, but five cleared the fence by a long way, it's out on any softball field, anywhere.

My only peeve was that there were a small number undefeated 18u teams, in what was a very diverse field of pool play, especially with the combined age groups. Impossible to really judge anything by runs allowed or other stats. It would have been nice to at least have those teams play it out on the field, especially when we had a college coach show up to see a specific player in the morning, then the entire thing is washed out at 10 AM and then the younger teams play later on.

Tough call all the way around, probably many good teams there at 3-1 in pool play that by the luck of the draw, had a little tougher pool than others. There is just no right answer for weather.

The rules for tiebreaks were published and we understood and respect them. Maybe Classics and Lasers blow us and the Power out. Then again, maybe not. We'll never know. It's the beauty of sports and what makes it fun.

We play to get better, we want to play the best, gotta play the best and beat the best to be the best. My remark on Terrell was just a jab at the Buckeye population in fun, at least Penn State and Ohio State aren't USC (University of Several Cons).

My thought for some of the Ohio folk to start making more trips East was sincere, come on over to the right tournaments and you'll get a good test, need to get more of our top Pittsburgh teams in things like GAPSS, and need more Ohio teams at Battle of the Burgh and IUP. There are a lot more quality teams in the PA region than just Power and Spirit teams from large organizations, and we'll give you a good game and you'll have a good time.

And hopefully next time it's hot and sunny on Sunday!

Is this the same cyclones team that was at the best of the best in Massillon a few weeks ago?

FPdad, yep, that would be us, and it just goes to make my point. We really sort of stunk it up at the B.O.B. a few weeks ago, couldn't throw a strike, couldn't catch the ball, when we did catch the ball Lord only knows where it was going, and most of the time couldn't hit the floor if we fell. (I say "we" because I'm the scorebook, so I take the bad with the good).

Worst showing of the year. Ironically we had the best practice of the year on the Wednesday before.

That's the whole point. Teenage girls. You just never know what you're going to get. If you've got it figured out, write the book and you'll make millions.

And that was the frustrating part, went all that way, paid hotels, and it was ug-lee. So this time we played much better and the girls wanted a chance to try to meet some of those awesome teams, the ladies are ready to go, and then the rain.

I thought so, your team made quite an impression at the BOB, especially the game against the tournament directors team.

Not exactly sure of what you're talking about at the BOB. If you're talking about the confrontation there between the coaches, below are the facts, since I was sitting 10 feet away at the time. If you're talking about some other incident, spell it out.

If you're talking about a couple of college boys in the stands with kazoos, they knew players on both teams from school, so they whooped it up a bit, but as far as I know never said anything negative. A certain mom (not my wife) would've let them have it if it happened.

There was a collision at home plate between our runner and the Wolfpack catcher. One of our coaches asked if the catcher was okay and it was (apparently and surely) misunderstood by the coach of the Wolfpack as something else being said. Fans are yelling, bodies are flying, it was confusion for a few seconds. Being late in a hot day, neither of the men was in the mood for small talk, and it got a bit testy there for a second or two. At the end of the game they shook hands and both teams said good game to each other. If the grown men weren't sincere about it, that's their deal.

The runner in question went in head first. She does so because of an old injury. The slide was clean, arms out, player was diving into the dirt before the collision, it was a good hard play by both players. The runner did not cross her arms or lower her shoulder into the catcher, but the umpire is pretty worked up saying, "I should eject her right now." This didn't diffuse the situation.

In the BOB, we heard multiple explanations from the umpires about substitution rules and so on, clearly all of the men and women in blue were not on the same page. A few of the home plate umpires were very inconsistent. This isn't the T.D.'s fault, just an indication of some of the umpiring that went on that weekend. They did not control a lot of the aspects of the games at times.

While the umps tried to figure themselves out on another different play, a Wolfpack runner standing on third base told our third baseman that she saw what happened and said it was a bad call, and they had gotten some bad calls during another game that hurt them. They both agreed that it wasn't the best umpiring they had seen. So the girls figured out how to work it out.

Maybe it's just best that we stay here from now on, you stay there, and leave it at that.

There is one huge reason we come to Ohio, and that isthe quality of your teams from top to bottom we play is much better softball in Ohio. No doubt, most of the teams we have played in Ohio from GAPSS, Best of the Best, to Midwest Signature Showcase where all very solid fundamentaly sound teams.

I feel the pitching is much better that we face there as well. Much deeper. The pitcher from the Doom 95 team we played yesterday was outstanding, excellent movement on her ball. Keep up the great work young lady, there was a lot of coaches that left very impressed with you yesterday.

Comment from me about the Ohio State QB, I absolutely love him and I'm a Pitt Fan. I had the true pleasure of watching him play high school ball for years as he only played about 10 miles or so from my house at Jeannette high school. Him and the Hall ball at RB are true talents.

I know we where lined up to play some great teams yesterday, I just wish it would have happened. As for our first couple of games at Best of the Best, I'll be the first one to say, we absolutely stunk it up our first two games in the tournament. But if you look at what we have done in Western PA, we have done extremely well here this season. Not to make excuses but we are a very banged up and hurting team right now physically. Two of my starters didn't make the trip this past weekend due to injuries, and I had two other nursing ice packs that played very little. We had 3 pick ups on on our roster yesterday in order to field a healthy team.

As for the tournament director at the Best of the Best, he's a great coach and has an outstanding team, and runs a great organization, and tournaments. And yes, we shook hands after the game or actually about the 5th inning and we wished each other well. I really am looking forward to coming back to Ohio in the fall.

Ohio to all of you, keep up the great work, you have a great thing going on there, I hope Western PA can catch up with you. We have some great teams here as well, but honestly we don't have the depth of teams that you do right now.

I'm amazed at how God has shown up in my life the past 6 months. blown away.

To steal from this MD, I can attest to this, my g/f and I had our first child about 12 weeks ago, she was 6 weeks premature, and weighed in at 3 lbs. 13 ounces. Weighed in yesterday at 9 lbs. I can truly say God has blessed me, beautiful daughter, great girl friend, an oustanding group of young ladies to coach, parents that have become truly great friends, and good health, and both my parents are still doing well.

God is indeed good. Good Luck to you MD, and thanks to everyone from Ohio for their hospitality this weekend.

P.S. As for nationals, we are hoping to scrap together enough bodies, and we are heading off to Myrtle Beach for the World Fast Pitch Connection. Should be nice to relax a bit, and get some sun, and rest.

The Cincy Flames 16u played well. Started off with a win over the Lake Erie Wave, loss to Wolfpack. Then they played the Pittsburgh Power, very good team and had a left handed pitcher that was very good, Pittsburgh power 1 Cincy flames 0, what a game. Defense was the name of the game - fun game to be in and watch. Then we played Ohio Sharks and we won 3-0. Made it to bracket Play and ended up playing the Buckey Heat-Toledo and lost 6-2. The Cincy Flames played very well and had a great time at the tournament.
