What Specials rules do you want in 8 under Coach pitch tournaments?

If you could make your own tournament rules, what would they be?

1. When the lead runner stops, all runners stop.
2. Parents must sit in the outfield.
3. Coaches must leave their ego in the car. Keeping score is important, but it is not the top priority at this age.
4. Round robin format so each team gets x number of games, and schedules are not brutal on young girls.
to be continued-I can't remember all the things that drove me nuts last year

1. Each kid gets 5 pitches, it makes the game quicker, equals more interesting.
2. Pitcher player with ball in circle is dead ball, runners advance if half way or go back, if not.

Side note: Isn't it such an advantage to have a really good pitcher? Just find a parent that can remember where each kid likes to hit the ball and make them pitch every game!

1. Batters have maximum of 5 pitches to put ball in play.
2. Maximum of 5 runs per half inning with NO "catch up" rule.
3. When the ball is held by player pitcher in circle, "time" is called by umpire (regardless of if the pitcher might throw to a base, time is called).
4. When "time" is called by the umpire at the end of a play, players between bases: go back if they are not half way or more to next base, go to next base if they are half way or more to next base.
5. No bunting.
6. Entire roster present must bat.
7. **If a player cannot play their position or complete an at bat for any reason (injury, potty break, crying because they made a bad play, etc.), they can be skipped in the order while batting with NO penalty or substituted for in the field and MAY RETURN to the game.
8. Slushies, ice cream, or any other childhood treat MUST be provided to players by their coaching staff or parents at MINIMUM after the last game of the day has been completed. I'm not sure how to enforce that rule, but it should be a rule!

**At several tournaments the past few years, if a player could not continue an at bat or continue at their position while on defense, they were not allowed to return to the game after they composed themselves. That's a terrible rule for 8u considering there was no national championship or world series title on the line. We are trying to work these girls slowly into "big girl ball", not throw them in. That's why the rules for 8u's are different than 10u and higher in the first place.

8U is the instruction phase of fast pitch ball; therefore, we need to remember that we should strive to develop the mental skills of the game while not being ultra-strict so that the offense is running crazy around the bases. Girls need to comprehend where the play should be made. Strive to get the lead-runner out. Therefore - just throwing the ball back to the pitcher in the pitching circle does not allow for that development. At the same time, there needs to be some sort of "time" called so that the play can be over - otherwise we all know the offense will continue to run around the bases. There needs to be a happy medium (so to speak). If 8U does NOT allow for stealing, then that will help control some of the run. Thus, I offer this:

1) The defense player in advance of the lead runner needs to have control of the ball to push the runner back. Having the ball and holding the runner back should stop the play - all runners stop.
2) After the defense takes control of the ball and makes their play, they throw the ball to the pitcher in the circle. This also stops the play.
3) No Taunting allowed. This includes saying/chanting anything to the batter, pitcher, or any opponent. Cheers are meant to be positive to motivate your own team. If they turn to distract the opponents, then they are not a cheer - they are taunting.
4) 1 Coach is allowed in the outfield during defense.
5) Pitching coach can communicate with their batter to adjust their stance - but the base coaches should be the communicators with the runners.
6) If a child has a melt-down, injury, bathroom emergency, the roster should just skip them and allow them to return when ready. Don't penalize girls at this age.
7) The entire roster bats no matter how many.
8) 5 pitches maximum!
9) 5 run-rule per half inning.
10) Defense must be out of the runner's way - or the runner is declared safe. (Too many girls hog the base or stand in the path of the runner - causing pushing and falls.)
11) Runners can only take one extra base on an over-throw.
12) If the pitching coach accidentally gets hit by the ball, just re-pitch the ball. Don't count it. The point is to teach the kids how to hit and run fast to first - along with fielding. Freak obstacles shouldn't be a penalization.
13) The umpires should know the rules!
