Good Open Gym?

What happens at a good open gym?
Who organizes, who is allowed to help?
When should they start?
This year is obviously a done deal, how do you elevate the expectations for next year?

Put trash cans in all four corners of the gym, and have all the girls run laps until they puke at least once. THEN you know they are getting a workout! :lmao:

J/K - But how often do you see that? Isn't softball an explosive sport? Wouldn't reps of 60' sprints/rest be more productive and appropriate for conditioning?

The other thing that puzzles me is you have high school kids (coaches not allowed) teaching high school kids. No real qualified instruction going on for the most part.

Which leads me to believe the main purpose of "open gym" is for coaches to just see who shows up - who's actually dedicated enough to take time from their busy schedule to make an appearance? And those that DO show up - are they just screwing around goofing off, or actually doing something productive? I used to hear slacker reports all the time about the weight room...

Get away with as much as possible without getting caught ;)

Seriously, never understood the rule of no instruction. How can any coach better his/her team that way? Especially when some players coming out do not have much experience.

I agree with you 100% Shockwave. The rule stinks and all it does is punish the girls in my opinion.

Open Gyms separate the athletes from the players. Athletes want to show up and get better. Players show up to socialize or don't show up at all.

Hate to disagree but some of the athletes prefer to work with private instructors such as pitching coaches and batting coaches instead of running sprints in a gym for 5 days. They have been playing ball for the past 9 months since last season and are in great physical condition.

On the other hand we would just like to have the opportunity to have open gyms the other 4 days at our school.

But even a open gym should have some sort of structured regiment by the seniors or team captains. There should be no socializing, and the conditioning should be designed around softball skills and development, not just running sprints for one hour.
