I agree that Pickerington was a fiasco. It was quite evident that there were not enough volunteers for this tournament. Fridays pool games were being delayed waiting for someone to retreive balls from the nets. The young ladies in the concession stand tried to keep up with selling drinks and retreiving balls. I had one umpire that I know ask me to find him some balls to start a game. I asked the girls working the concessions and they said that they didn't know who to ask! I eyed some balls inside a storage room and gave the ump two new ones. My DD has played in the OCC the last 3 years and everyone knows that Pick centrals fields are some of the best draining fields around after a little rain. I walked the fields at noon and with very little effort they would have been playable at 12:30. This was either greed or laziness on the part of the TD. I do hope that our coach does not play in this tournament next year unless a new TD is in place with adequate volunteers.

Tough one for me. Our team (Championship Fastpitch) played GAPSS this weekend and we were disappointed with not playing on Sunday for sure. I then drove to Pickerington North (where I am a parent) to see if TD needed help. They had also cancelled. Berliner did not cancel according to what I heard. Here is where I come down on this:

1. Sounds like the tourney that had the most vounteers (Berliner) got to play.

2. Both of these tourneys are good tourneys and the guys running them are quality guys - Mike and Chris both - have known both for a long time.

3. The tourneys serve different groups of teams (ie, community travel vs. college look)

4. Both TD's will make sure they have the right number of volunteers in 2011 and both tourneys will be a success.

5. Championship will be back to GAPSS - and I would encourage teams that have played both of these tourneys over the last 10 years to air their thoughts and give them another chance.

Ok Statman. I have seen in threads before about 16u and 18u pants vs. shorts. My DD's team wears pants, but I have to tell you that it is changing. We are one of the few teams (that I have seen this year) wearing pants. While I completely agree with you, it seems like it is going back to shorts. My DD stated that she will never wear shorts-so we will see what happens next year.

The TD's have a responsibility to try to play the games. Last year there was rain Saturday and we played Sunday. Take this into account. Our team has been together for 5 plus years and this was our last tournament before we graduate 9 of our players. It is highly unlikly we will play next year so this was it for these girls. Their last tournament and it gets called because of rain. There really was NO effort to get these fields playable. When the game was called our girls went out on the field and just hugged each other and talked and cried. It was sad that they went out like this. I know the TD has no knowledge that this was our last but the lesson is if you want to put on a tournament and collect the $$ you owe it to all the teams to do your absolute best to complete the games. We came from the Cleveland - Akron area and spent some bucks in Columbus as we have done for the past 4 years. It was fun but really disappointing how it ended.

Good Luck to the Nordonia girls in their future. Great bunch of girls and coaches. Wish we could have got you back to Gahanna one last time.

To the TD with the lack of volunteers : with the number of teams at central this weekend wanting to play ball; I'm sure there were plenty of coaches and parents willing to do what ever was necessary to help get the fields ready. Most have played in Much worse conditions, and many have some experience getting wet fields ready for play without destroying the infield-(its not the first tournament in central ohio)!

The walking tacos are definatly the largest. We are trying to sink some of the profits back into field maintaince and indoor plumbing is on the wish list

being a former Pickerington coach I understand what it takes to put on that tournament. In years past we were blessed with some hard working parents who made the tournament a success by staying at the fields from 7am- whenever to make sure things went well. Sounds like Chris needs to explain to his parents the importance of volunteering to work the tournament and make it a requirement. Stingrays use many parent volunteers to make their tournament successful. Knowing Chris I am sure this was the last thing he wanted to do and I am sure he will have it fixed for next year.

Lack of volunteers isn't really an excuse as to why the tarps weren't deployed. Parents and players would have pitched in to get the fields covered. I understand that it makes running a tourney tough, and I thought that the tourney went fairly smooth up until Sunday. Central is a beautiful facility, one of the best I've seen. The TD was helpful and courteous to me when I inquired earlier in the year about hotels in the area. It was our team's last tourney and we would have loved to play Sunday. I know you can't control the weather, but the tarps would have thrown Momma Nature a curve ball and would have let the tourney continue with minimal delay. I'm not angry, just puzzled.

Those tarps are used occasionally. That is up to the discretion of the Coach - who was there. They will use them one two fields (varsity and jv) for high school playoffs. At Stingrays, they did an immaculate job at getting the fields ready after a deluge of rain late in the afternoon. Again........... - volunteers - no tarps used then. We played at 7 am the next morning.

Are there still many teams in Ohio wearing shorts? Out west I rarely see a team in shorts. Maybe 3% of the time do I see shorts.

Joe ... we played 16-U this year and I would say we saw about half shorts, half pants ... keep in mind though that it was a very warm summer here so some teams may have had both and chose to go with the shorts. We also didn't play in some of the more prestigious tournaments this year where I am guessing the mix would have been higher towards pants.

Thanks Lions FP. We tried to get in to the Lady Lions this year but the tournament was full. We waited too long. We enjoyed our experience there 2 years ago and wish you all the best. Who could forget the championship games....you guys played well and beat us. We were happy for the Anderson family and the Lions organization. First Class group.

One of the best experiences on and off the field I ever had in softball. I have a plaque in my office at work of the picture of the 2 teams after the championship game.
