Soft ball and base ball is a game played by kids, however it is orchestrated and run by adults and adults do not like to loose to kids or other adults!

Qoute is not about winning or lossing but about a practice ethic. I believe that there are lessons learned in both winning and losing. Agree that this is a game for kids, but I also believe that kids are at different levels of development both physical and mental, and unfortunately some will quit when the situation gets too much to handle. Therefore there are different levels of competition. I personally would rather see a player quit at practice prior to the championship game because it is about the Kids (plural) not Kid.

Then I can reflect if I could have done something different to help that individual, which I have had only one girl quit on me during practice because she could not keep up with the team. I had worked with her for 3 years prior in a different setting and had encouraged her to step up a level, but she was not ready for the level of commitment and physical sacrifice needed to compete at a select level. We are still great friends and I have been there for her multiple times and consider her as one of my favorite players of all times.

This is one of my favorites used often by the best teacher (in life and sports) I ever had...My Father...courtesy of the great Willie Mays

"It isn't hard to be good from time to time insports. What is tough, is being good every day."

I think you mean Bear Bryant however I get the point.

If a kid at any level is not getting it who job is it to help her get it?

Of course it is the adults and look around at the fields and tell me and be totally honest if some of the ADULTS are not exploiting the kids just to win and no life lessons per say were even a thought.

Girls especially want to know why and most coaches in my opinion can not explain them self well enough to teach them life lessons...so I will let it go at that.

You have no control over the results only on the execution." Mike Schmidt

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat. Theodore Roosevelt

I have this put on the ceiling/wall as you walk downstairs so my DD's see it every day

this is from basketball but applies to softball...

Some players look, other players see...

I talk to my 11u all the time about 'seeing' and feeling the game.. not just looking. I want them to see what is about to happen and be ready for it.

If you can motivate a player, your job is half done... if you can get a player to motivate themself... your job is complete.

I read this once when I was a kid but never really understood it until I was a team chief in the Air Force. After 20 years supervising and managing employees, it now makes total sense:

"The key to being a good manager is keeping the people who hate me away from those who are still undecided." - Casey Stengel
