This is probably what he was referring to.

OHSAA Board of Directors Meeting Highlights - COLUMBUS, Ohio

The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors met Thursday in Columbus for its regularly scheduled February meeting. The following are highlights from the meeting. The complete set of meeting minutes will be posted at OHSAA.org.

By a 63 vote, the board approved an OHSAA OutofSeason Coaching Instruction Proposal that will allow expanded opportunities for Board of Education approved coaches in the team sports to provide instruction outside the season of play. The regulation becomes effective Sept. 3, 2013. Individual instruction is defined as no more than four individuals present at any one time in all combined facilities where instruction is taking place. Team sports include s o c c e r , volleyball, field hockey, football, ice hockey, basketball, softball and baseball. Note that "no contact periods" and the summer coaching period (10 days of team coaching permitted from June 1 -July 31) will continue to exist and that outofseason instruction is already permitted in individual sports (golf, tennis, cross country, wrestling, swimming & diving, gymnastics, bowling and track & field).

So year round coaching will be permitted except during no contact period as long as there is no more than 4 kids at a time? While that may be great for the various HS programs, I wonder about how the multisport athlete is going to juggle all of this. And how many HS softball/ baseball/ basketball/ volleyball coaches will start holding practices (rotating 4 girls at a time) on weekends that which might interfere with AAU, JO, Travel Ball (in the fall/winter) talk about forcing these kids to make some tough choices

Well Im both a travel and High School coach and for me this is great. Most of the families in my community cant afford pitching and hitting coaches year around. This gives me an opportunity to work extra with girls that want some extra instruction and I have quite a few that I believe would take advantage of this.

As is the case with most things, this will be good for some and bad for others. There will be coaches that will be able to offer extra help to players that need it and can benefit from it. There will also be coaches that will require players to take part in extra practices and put undue restraints on players time. Everyone will think they are doing the right thing and the others are the problem.

I think this is a great thing for HS coaches who truly care about the kids, I highly doubt that the lame HS coaches will spend any more time than they have already have been.

I think it is a great change. You can't make it mandatory. It allows work to be done with the kids willing to put in the time.

Like Brian said in a previous post, this rule will allow players/programs that are at a monetary disadvantage to receive year around instruction from their HS coach. I'm sure there will be coaches that will abuse this rule like they have the old rules. But this sort of evens the playing field and doesn't restrict how many hours or days a week coaches are able to work with their players.

I don't care whether you like the change or not, this one rule right here will elevate the level of play at the HS level throughout the state of Ohio 10 times over!!!:yahoo: I applaud the OHSAA for finally getting out of the dark ages and voting this in!!! :yahoo:

Another positive point of this rule change will be the result of better coaches being hired at the HS level. Many great coaches (a lot of them travel) will now start applying for HS positions because this rule is not so restrictive, thus allowing those coaches to have year around contact with their players, other than the "No Contact" period.

This is a great rule change... It should not change anything other than the possibility to now allow H.S coaches to work with some of their own kids other than just the season. For coaches who give lessons then it has been pretty rediculous that they can work with other school's players but were banned from helping their own. This is not some rule change that will make H.S softball players have to practice anymore than they wish to, it is just an avenue to simply now allow a coach to work with his own players (if they choose) outside of the season.

This brings Ohio equal to the West Coast, as most of the coaches in the West HS Programs also Coach Travel Ball and their are some good HS Coaches, but as we constantly slam HS Coaches, one may want to ask the AD why they hired who they hired, not the coaches fault as a job is a job in this economy, but if the HS program is serious about winning then all AD's know who they need to hire and it's not the Science Teacher, lmao!!!

I believe that Michigan has this same rule and has for several years. From what I've seen the coaches work with 4 player for an hour. So this will bring Ohio to the same level as other states

As a travel coach and a high school coach, this is great. I actually wrote up a proposal close to this and submitted it over a year ago. I have a couple of my hs girls on my travel team and we do play in showcase tournaments in the fall and I couldn't coach them. It was hurting both my hs players along with the entire team. It is a good change for those who are there to get the girls to the next level.

I agree with the posters that support this change for all the reasons noted. As a former school coach, one of the reasons I walked away from school coaching was the restriction of the ability to work with my pitching students as they joined the school teams. One question. Can anyone explain the term "combined facilities" in the regs? Does that mean if the HC has a group of four in the batting cage the JV coach can't have another group of four in the gym working on fielding? Or something else.

Yes, that is exactly what they are speaking of.. Such as your higshcool has two gyms, you cannot have one group of four in one gym and the other group in the other gym. Or any facilities that you are working at, you cannot have more then 4 girls there working at the same time with coaches.
