H1N1 - Swine Flu outbreak

The Swine Flu epidemic seems to have reached our area, here in SWO. After just hearing about the tragedy at Miami University in which a first year student recently passed away, we should all be alerted as to taking precautions, washing our hands, using hand sanitizer, no sharing water bottles, sneeze into your elbow, etc. In our school system alone, there were 300 students out sick yesterday. My dd is on the school volleyball team and there were 4 girls on the team sick yesterday, and now my dd is home sick today. We have heard there are 3 confirmed cases of H1N1 virus at the middle school and 4 cases of H1N1 virus at the high school, all football players. The school is doing its part and we are awaiting vaccines to be made available to the students. Please, please emphasize to your kids to wash their hands regularly and no spit swapping, as my dd's coach recently put it.

FLDJNKY10 - Not intending a hijack, but is that your DD in your avatar? Just wanted to compliment her on her form! Although it's sometimes hard to tell from a single pic, she appears to put a lot of energy into her throws. Looks like she's almost to the edge of the circle with her stride, and I LOVE the drag foot (no illegal leaping). Timing appears to be spot on too. Good job!

That's her and she's a stud pitcher. Looking forward to my daughters playing with in HS ball over the next few years.

Hope your daughter is feeling better soon along with everyone else over there. This flu stuff is nothing to mess with!

Should add that professionals have stated recently that the idea of having H1N1 parties to intentionally get kids introduced to the various in it's natural form before mutation is a REALLY BAD IDEA. Not like the other flues, as the death rate/risk is so much higher.

They compared it to playing Russian roulette

That is crazy! I hadn't heard that was what some parents were thinking about doing.

If they really want to do something good for thier kids they should get them vaccinated for Influenza now and again when the H1N1 vaccine is available in the next 2 weeks.

Yes, that's my dd. Thank you for your kind words. This was taken by one of my team parents and it's a very nice shot. I appreciate your honest evaluation. Yes, she does put everything she has in each pitch. I can't take all the credit though, she had a pitching coach for each game last year and her pitching instructor is Mark Blascyk out of Newark. He is awesome. Thanks again, it's nice to hear she is on the right track.

Thanks Hammer, very kind. With your 2 girls and a few others, the HS team will be a team to watch in the Miami Valley for the next few years.

ERA thanks, we're taking extra precautions and hoping the family doesn't catch it too. She is quarantined to her room until it passes. She does NOT however have H1N1, just your basic congestion and fever. I hope the school is able to keep it under some control. They are being great about keeping us informed. The superintendant was interviewed on last night's local news and we're keeping close tabs on it.

My son had the H1N1 a week ago at Miami University. They gave him Tamiflu which if administered in the first 48hrs supposedly helps relieve a lot of symptoms. He really only felt sick for about a 3 day period. He's also a freshman like the student who died but did not know each other or dorm near one another.

Not sure if it is the same student. But around here the news reported test results showed the student did not even have H1N1.

I have talked to a Dr. about the swine flu, and she says it is a mild strain right now,

with the death rate being very, very LOW, and that there is a lot of undue panic in the

public.

My doctor said the same thing. "regular old flu" kills many many more people each year than Swine flu. Once a "neato" name is attached to it, the media runs away with it.

How did the Bird Flu pan out or Killer Bees.

He did say that it does have the "potential" to be bad if it mutates more and all the right variables align up.

Still, sick is sick no matter what it is called. I don't want swine flu, bird flu, cow flue, dog flu or any flu for that matter and I don't want to get stung by any killer bees either.

As I understand it, "regular old flu" kills mainly the sick and elderly while the pig flu goes after the young & healthy. Luckily I am somewhere in between.

question what is guillain-barr syndrome ? FR

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/gbs/gbs.htm and

http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/gbs_qa.htm

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances, the weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body.

From the CDC..In the United States, for example, an estimated 3,000 to 6,000 people develop GBS each year on average, whether or not they received a vaccination. This is about 1 to 2 cases of GBS per 100,000 people.

CDC laboratory studies have shown that no children and very few adults younger than 60 years old have existing antibody to 2009 H1N1 flu virus; however, about one-third of adults older than 60 may have antibodies against this virus (http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/qa.htm).

I hope everyone stays healthy, this virus is indeed nasty stuff. We have opened a Flu clinic (which has been very busy) at our hospital to try and keep the children with these influenza like symptoms out of the waiting room for our E.D. and minimize others exposure to the virus.
