Last week our # 4 hitter was hit in the head, the visiting team infield ran to the pitcher and gave her High Fives. Am I getting soft in my old age or was this over the top.

Was it a "celebratory high Five" or a "that's alright high five"? There is a huge difference in my book. Some pitchers can really melt-down after hitting a batter, especially in the head. Was there concern from the coaching staff? How was the pitchers control before and after?

Nobody likes to see a batter get hit, but it happens. When it is intentional is when I really have a problem. My DD has been whacked a few times intentionaly (or at least it looked that way). I know of some coaches that will use this tactic to intimadate a good player.

First, if this was sincere for the act, either the coach or umpires should have removed the players.

Secondly, could this just have been the infielders' way of keeping the pitcher in the game? ?I know if my pitcher hit someone in the head I would hope that my senior SS or catcher would go talk to her.

The pitcher is a seasoned 18U travel ball player. I beleive she had one walk in seven innings - no wild pitches - gave up five hits.

I would be very upset with my infielders if they were giving high fives after my pitcher plunked someone in the head,if they walk over to the pitcher for the purpose of getting the focus past the incident and on to the next batter that is a sign of a mature ball player, but if I see smiles, laughter, or high fives I would blow a gasket

As long as there was nothing to provoke this reaction I would have a strong talk with my dd about that type of reaction to a hit batter. ? Now if the batter or team had been saying or doing something to provoke the bean ball, ?I don't know. ? The thing I see on a semi regular basis is batters walking up almost to the batters box to time the pitcher during warm ups. ?Batters do this to gain and advantage or itimidate, ?I'm suprised more warm up pitches don't slip.

timac4,

there was no provication, the young lady who got hit is a top shelf catcher who is a class act, the HS coach does not condone hot dogging or unsportsmanship like conduct.

To hit someone on purpose is the lowest act of all. The very thought of this type of behavoir should never be permitted anywhere. What would happen if a pitcher beaned a batter on purpose and the batter charged the mound and hit the pitcher. Same thing right? If you say it's not, you have no business being a coach.

I've actually seen more girls give a sorry type look at the batter as she heads to first than anything else. I have seen other fielders also go to the mound to say forget about it, shake it off type, but never high fives.

I think I have only seen it one summer season and had a mom overhear in a restroom that a pitcher admitted to another player of throwing at a batter on purpose. Sad but true and if I ever heard, they'd be sitting.

I was watching a game in Columbus last season during a tournament and the batters pointed to the pitcher and waved waved her hand and told her to "Bring It". Well, the pitcher brought it alright, right to the arm of the batter. That was the last time that batter ever did that the whole tournament. As a coach I would never condone that type of stuff, but with young ladies things have a way of working themselves out. Know what I mean ? ;)

Obviously I am not a pitcher, but I have no qualms about hitting a runner in the back if being provoked. I think it shows little class to play with the catcher, such as talking to them while up at bat and if you want to mess with me and tell me to bring it on, I will. I dont play my game soft and I don't throw soft, especially when I am irritated. I see nothing wrong with that and I don't understand why anyone would. Now if the girl was given a high-five because she hit her, and she hit her because she had a personal vendetta against her than I think that shows no class, and obviously the coach does not have control.

catcher00,

What a fine act of sportmanship you are. If a batter would want a pitcher to bring it.. then bring the heat. That dose not mean to purposely hit someone because you are irritated. I would wonder just how many college coaches wouldn't give you a second look. I am sure your coaches are proud of you.

ypu are quite right, they are proud of me and quite a few colleges have given me second and third looks thanks!!! ;D now that you shoved your foot in your mouth, obviously that was taken the wrong way....I do not go around hitting any person that irritates me just because I feel like it. maybe i should have said that clear out just in case someone got confused, but if a base runner talks trash, verbally abuses me, etc. I think I am perfectly fine because a lot of coaches won't stop them from doing it. So someone has to take the matters into their own hands. All it takes is the girl being thrown out once or sliding into me at home to understand that I don't take it and they stop. If they don't thats when I get "irritated". Obviously my use of the word irritated was a nicer word for p***d, but I understand now that I cant use euphemisms

I don't think "taking things into your own hands" by purposely hitting someone with the ball is acceptable under any circumstance. And hitting them in the back when they don't even see it coming is something to be especially proud of? What am I missing?

Catch...

I would hope that you are playing 12u, but I realize that you must be a bit older to have colleges looking at you. I truly appreciate your fire and passion, but trash talk is just part of the game. No one has ever been injured by words, but a ball in the back is a different story.

I would hope that these are runners that are inside the base line on their way to first and you have no other option. It would be a shame if you were to be passed-over by a college for not having control of your emotions. Look at all the heat college programs are beginning to take. The last thing a coach wants is someone that will tarnish what they are trying to build.

I have seen many players that had outstanding skills and passion to play, but lack the maturity to deal with the expectation of a college program. When you're "irratated", let your play do the talking.

Well I do not plan on changing the way I think, and obviously you aren't either. So we could argue til we are blue or just agree to disagree, I prefer the latter because I do not have the time or energy to waste at this moment. I admit I see your side, but I still believe I am right and you still believe your right. Thats fine, its all about opinion and I don't see anything wrong with having a different opinion. So I will simply call a draw
