We are fortunate to live in a small D4 district where excelling on the field is expected and we do no have the mentality of entitlement based on grade level. The girls have fun year after year but they win a lot, too. There has never been a cut that I can remember. The best 9 or 10 girls regardless of grade level play a majority of the varsity innings and the coach finds room for everyone else. Occasionally there is a senior that has been a marginal starter in prior years and the coach cannot justify playing her in front of a more talented incoming freshman. The coach's approach is to thank the senior for her past participation and let her stay on the team if she wants but to let her know upfront that her innings will be very limited. Some girls are OK with that and are thrilled just to wear the uniform and others chose to move on to another sport. If you want to win, you have to play your best players - period. Cutting - avoid if at all possible but make sure you have bench space available.
