Heres the scenerio....An 11 yo (going into 6th grade) has already been asked to play for a High school team. YES in 3 years! ANd is already practicing with the team of freshman 14 yo. Is this legal? And how can the High school already say she will be playing for them? Im not even sure this is fair to the child. Theres a huge diiference from 12u to 14u , let alone 6th grade ball vs. freshman. Im just curious if this goes against OHSAA rules?

Those freshman are not freshman till they have participated in their first scrimmage, and then their elgibility starts.

Why would a coach ever, ?and many do, ? tell a player that ?they are going to play here or there or at all before tryouts have ever been held. ? It seems to me that a coach would want to encourage participation while at the same time making sure you know your spot is based on your performance during tryouts and after. ? Many coaches will in general say to potential players who are currently in lower grade levels that they want them to play at their HS. ? This encourages participation, ? but to offer a spot when a kid has not even begun to mature physically is not , IMO, ?the best course of action. ? Hey but many coaches can't do one thing, ?one thing that would make their lives easier, ? their players lives easier, ?that would save a lot of misunderstandings, ?and that is "shut up".

By OHSAA rules she can lose a year of eligibility if she practices with the HS.

No and Yes. Need more info, but if the freshman team is a sanctioned high school team , she only has 4 years of eligibilty. If she is practicing with 9'th graders her eligibilty has started. I don't have my OHSA book with me , but I will cut and paste the exact wording for you later. 6'th and 7'th graders cannot practice with high school players.

Sorry still cannot copy and paste. 4-3-3 Look under ohsaa.org/general/about/bylaws.pdf It covers 7' and 8'th graders.

Assuming this is a summer team it may or may not be a problem. In general, during the time period from June 1 to July 31 any number of girls from a school district may play together without regard to age; i.e. ASA doesn't care that Suzie is 11, just that she's under 18 as of January 1. If however, it is a formal practice for the HS program conducted by coaches within the school district using their contact days then you may have an issue.

I responded to you on the general posting. Look under 4-3-3 ohsaa.org/general/about/bylaws.pdf. If she is practicing with 9'th graders she just lost one semester of eligility in high school. If a coach did this he was very foolish. 7' and 8'th graders cannot practice with high school girls and 9'th 12 cannot practice with 7-8 graders.

I've merged the two semi-identical threads that were running on this. Too hard for me to remember what was said on each. ;)

Regarding the unlimited girls from the same HS squad playing together from June 1 - July 31, can the HS coach be the coach of that summer team?

Unlimited HS teammates may play together from June 1(or when HS softball ends) thru July 31(and into August for Nationals), but their HS coach must follow the 50% rule. ?So If their HS coach is coaching them - only 4 of his/her softball players allowed. ?You can google OHSAA bylaws. ?Every parent of a middle school or high school athlete should read and understand the eligibility requiremments. ?7th and 8th graders follow the same rules as high school for the most part.

pretty sure the HS coach can only have 10 "contacts" (June & JUly) even if there is only 1 player present.

OHSAA bylaws sec 10-3-6 lists an exception to the "10 contact rule" from June1 to July 31 if the coach follows the 50 % rule.

JUst to Clarify,

The 11 yo is on a tournament team and the coaches are not the High School coach that is allowing her to practice with them. This is a local catholic high schoo coach who saw her playing and offered her to practice with them because he told her she would play for him in 3 years anyways. I was just curious is it was legal and also this girl blew off her tournament practice to attend the High Scholl practice the week of a big tournament!!! To me -NOT GOOD!!

Thanks for all your info and I'll be sure to read the by-laws for future reference since my DD will be attending 7th grade this yeart but plays CYO.

I'm sure the high school is playing under OHSAA rules. Then if the coach is paid or unpaid, it doesn't matter they still must be approved, under the new rules. I'm sure someone is running the practice. If she is playing with upper classmen then I would be careful.. The rules can be confusing, Thanks to OHSAA , you must look at the general rules and sport specific.. Good example is open gym allows anyone to attend and no coaches can run the practice.
