I have heard that if the school your duaghter attends does not offer softball , she is allowed to play for another school . My question is , what is the exact rule on this ? I was told this is true for any sport , I'm just wanting to know for softball . Do they have to play for the closest school ? Same division ? Any help here is appreciated thanks !

Well if it isn't true then I know some schools who are breaking the rules. I know a girl who runs Cross Country for a neighboring school becuase her school doesn't offer it . I just am trying to find the rules behind this . Her parents said when the school dropped the program they were told to contact this other school and she would be permitted to run for them .

Not true whatsoever!!! There are a lot of schools that don't offer certain sports, which would allow hundreds of kids to play a sport at another school. OHSAA doesn't allow it and most schools wouldn't want it either for liability reasons. Not sure who you got your info from...but it's inaccurate or someone is circumventing/breaking the rules.

Is it a HS or MS? Is it possibly a club sport at the other school? Here is the OHSAA bylaw:

1-6-4 Interscholastic teams/squads sponsored by a member school may not consist of students
from more than one school.

EXCEPTION: Member schools containing grades 7 and 8 may combine students from two or
more schools within the school district to form one interscholastic team in a sport.
Requests
for permission to combine students from two or more schools in the same non-public or public
school system must be submitted annually to the OHSAA in writing by the superintendent of the
non-public or public school system.

Turns out this Cross Country girl was 8th grader . This is why I asked , and yes I was slightly miss informed . Thanks !

I do know that at the grade school and high school level kids may play CYO sports for their parish not their school so it may appear that they are playing for another school. cyo is not a part of the OHSAA and you can not play both. I wish it was true because I have a good sized boy and our school does not have football so it would be great to send him somewhere else to play a sport but be able to keep him in our hometown small school environment.

Last month when Midview was going through their levy (thank Gosh it passed), they were only going to remove some sports. The AD stated that it wasn't fair because those kids in the removed sports would not be able to play for another school unless they opened enrolled and then sat out for a year. Midview chose to remove all sports that way if it didn't pass, students could go to another school next year and play without having to wait out for a year. Because no sports would be offerred.

So to answer your question-no they can't just go if one sport is not offerred all the sports have to leave the school and then they would have to open enroll to the school they were playing for.

For the ruling on the combining girls to make a team-they must be in the same school district. For example-some big cities have more than one middle school, but are in the same school district. This rule would not apply if a midview middle schooler went to Elyria (just to play a sport-but still went to Midview for classes) as they are not in the same school district. Verbiage can be tricky and that is where they get us with understanding the rules.

Not if they are a member of OHSSA in that sport, then they don't have a choice but to follow OHSSA rules. They may be getting away with it but they are in violations of OHSAA rules.
