Just wondering how early most teams arrive for away games for warmups? Our girls get to the field about 40-45 minutes before but take no swings in coaches warmups, and everyone is wondering why we don't hit. When I'm early enough to watch others warmup everyone gets some swings in. Unless they do it on their own they don't get BP at home games either. Just looking for opinions. Thanks.

We would get to the away games about 45min to an hour early.
The ladies would run, stretch, loosen their arms, then start taking swings while the pitchers and catchers warming up... If we were there real early the ladies would soft toss / hit into the outfield. If not they would hit into the bow net or take some swings off a hit stick.

The pitchers and catchers would be the last to go through hitting and sometimes would be taking swings after the game starts with bench players or a parent feeding balls or holding the hit stick. During the game bench players that may be called on to hit take some swings will step out and hit into the bow net off a tee or have another feed balls.

Our girls are typically an hour and a half early for home games and at least an hour early for away games, depending on the distance. At both venues they have a full warm up including hitting. The balls, tee and net stay up behind the dugout for the duration of the game to stay warm and loose.

While it would certainly be ideal to get in swings before away games, it wasn't always possible when I coached and, if I remember right, it seldom happened. We would be lucky to get to the field more than 45-60 minutes before the game started on school days. By the time we got settled in the dugout, stretched, took some infield and fly balls, and some bunting practice, it was time to go. Plus we didn't have the room or equipment with us ... not saying it was impossible or ideal but it was what it was. Certainly on home games, we had the time and equipment to hit into a net at least.

With the proper organization and time management you can almost pack in an intire practice in to 1 hour. If ladies know the routine and move with a purpose an hour is more than enough.

JV or Varsity? Most veteran coaches are varsity and JV are less experienced. Talk to the head coach, he/she could provide this coach with some guidance? I can understand no BP, for far away games though.

Can't believe they don't get any BP at home games ? Our girls are there an hour and 45 minutes early to home games and get tons of swings in. Away games vary. Seems we get there about 45 minutes early (when the bus shows to pick us up on time) but that's a different thread, don't get me started on that :)

A lot of variables play into this. The travel distance being the most important with the potential of travel delays (traffic or breakdown) being second and then the need for every kid to use the restroom once they arrive.

So for local travel, our local HS takes batting practice in the field house before leaving on the bus. This seems to have worked well in the past.

We start for an hour before the home games. This allows most of the Varsity to get to hit and then field. We turn the field over to the visiting team 30 minutes before game time. Then we hit off of a stick, heavy balls or wiffles. We can usually get the non-starters through at least one rotation at home. The catchers work with the pitchers and we get ready to play.

An Away game is different in that we have a field for only 20 minutes and can't run through all the practice we can at a home game. We are controlled by bus times and simply can't leave as early as we may like. We squeeze the practice to fit the time and do the best we can.
