Hitting and Hitters Discussion Hitting lesson before a tournament

Reading most of the post here one thought comes to mind would be why even tell him about lessons before a tournament unless it conflicts with a team practice. If he does not know then there is no conflict between player and coach. To some people, taking a lesson usually means correcting something in the swing (or working to correct). He may feel since they are # 1 and 2 hitters he would not want something to change potential success in tournaments. It sounds as if your dd`s go for mental reinforcement of their mechanics which works for them. How many other players and parents have a problem with this coach?

Going to your hitting coach, assuming like others said he is not doing a tear down just reinforcing what she was already doing, is a great thing. Its like she is mentally getting ready for the tourny. I love it! I think your coach might be letting his ego get in the way of the real objective in coaching a team.

Oh and I hope you went to him with you concerns before posting here on OFC (unless your sure he doesnt read it), it might actually make matters worse. Communication is rule #1 to having a succesful program at any level.

Trakin,

My dd has only had this instructor for 4 years. He is the reason people walk up to her and tell her what a beautiful swing she has. He is the reason why at 98lbs she can send the ball to the fence. Her instruction with him is about sticking with what works, muscle memory and what someone else mentioned earlier. He knows my dds swing. He knows her bad habits and how to correct them.

Let me explain our situation. My dd played for three years on our older 14u team(who her hitting instructor is the head coach of) My dd left his team last year b/c she was one of the weaker players on a stonger team (our first mistake) we wanted to see her get more playing time before High School. She finished out the season with Chain Reaction ( another strong team). When we heard of the second 14u team being built we decided to come back to Ohio Blast this year. The Organization Pres. and founder is a family member and also my dd's batting instructor. Ohio Blast is home for us and we would like to stay in the Organization but our new coach ( a first year travel coach) is not what we are used to or expect from a travel coach as far as knowledge of the game. He recently threated to sit our girls on the bench if they show up tired b/c they take extra hitting instruction. He is very limited in his knowledge of drills when he attempts them often he is teaching them incorrect. He has been offered several times a helping hand from other coaches in our Organization who have more years under their belts and he refuses to take the help.

I personally feel it is a power struggle and unfortionately the girls are who will pay the price. A good coach should alway be open to help and more knowledge. That is what makes our older 14u a good team. Those three coaches all come to the table with something to offer. None of them think they know all there is to know and they are constantly trying to improve their knowledge of the game.

SO the org president is a family member AND the hitting instructor that your DD goes to that the coach doesn't her too. WOW. Org Pres/hitting instructor should get the smarts or guts to get rid of this new coach. Quickly, times a wasting, spring starts today!

Either get rid of or inforce all coaches in organization to take part in coaching clinics I think. Like I said in my past posts this coach is not a bad guy, he just lacks knowledge. How do you go about replacing a head coach this time of the year? A lot easier said then done.

Your right, a LOT easier said then done but if something isn't done it could be a very long year and you hate to have a bad year because there are so few for fastpitch. If it were me I would have discussion with coach, a sit down, and nicely explain that you will continue doing what has obviously been working and that he will have to do what he must. Can't see him following through with sitting your daughter. How would that fly with rest of team? Good luck, really hope it works out. Spring Starts Today!

Your dd coach sounds stupid.

My dd also plays on Blastmoms dd's team. She is one of the girls who take hitting lessons from the same coach. Her team coach tried to tell her last night that her head should be facing him (the pitcher) after her swing. That she should not be facing the batted ball. (does that make sense?) My dd has been taking private hitting lessons since she was 8 years old. Never has a coach told her not to track the ball!! I have to tell you Comittment or no I am considering changing teams!!

Hammy, you're blunt as all get out but it seems you might be onto something.

We put a white rag glued down inside our tees to look at after contact.
Helps with correcting some swing mechanics.

dd likes the $ 5 bill left in the T by someone at one of the clinics. That really worked!

Well, it is all about communitcation. I think we need to sit down with the coach and the head of the organization and hash it out. Maybe we can see eye to eye and he will take it more seriously. I really don't want to leave and neither does Blastmom. This team could be really strong. We just have to get past a strong willed coach. We'll see.

Wow, interesting posts. I usually dont like to get involved in these but...Talk about being between a rock and a hardplace! Communication is the 1st step always try to talk it out in private away from the kids. Sounds like all the girls get along great so you'd hate to see a break up happen but the bottom line is you all have to be on the same page or troubled times are definately ahead in the future. I hope all you guys can get together and work it out if not its better to happen now than later..Good luck..

Hitting lessons before a tournament is fantastic if you can have the instructor there that your daughter sees on a regular basis.I am sure that is probably not easy to do unless they might be there for some special reason such as a clinic. My daughter goes to Howard carrier and I would love to have Howard at every tournament she plays in ,because I know she would probably hit at least .100 points higher. Hopefully we will get to see Howard a few days before she plays in tournaments and if we get real lucky Howard may attend a few.Howard if you read this she hit really well this weekend in the two games she played bend at the waist and soften the knees. Thanks to Howard she is becoming the hitter that she needs to be to get to the next level. Thanks Howard
