Just looking through the Teams Looking For Players Threads and it's just amazing how many "NEW" or 1st year teams there seems to be this year. And everyone of them are looking for 1 or 2 players to finish the team , and they are all playing "LOCAL" tournaments. Are there any Rec. leagues left out there any more? Or has everyone become a "TRAVEL" team. Even the "TRAVEL" teams are still looking for players to finish off their team. And now to top it all off... seems like every new "TRAVEL" team is trying to run a tournament too .. When will all of this madness stop !!!! JMHO ;&

Sounds like musical chairs in reverse - new chairs are added instead of taken away.

Not only are there alot of first year teams, but also many orgs are having as many teams as possible in every age group. Watering down the talent in their own orgs so to speak. As far as teams doing so many local tournaments this is a direct result of the economy I think.

I have not seen to many new tournaments so to speak, but do know of a few orgs that have taken over to head an established tournament.

Is it a bad thing that there are more teams? And why is that? Maybe, just maybe, in the long run, it is helping the overall talent level in Ohio. More girls are playing instead of sitting the bench for a team.

...and more softball teams means less girls getting lured into Communist type sports where they are gone forever... (that ones for you, Joe A. :D)

Could it be that demand for softball is up? When I was a kid there was no girls fastpitch. Girls played baseball or nothing. Most washed out after tee ball, few advanced to minors, a small fraction of them went to majors and I knew of none who advanced beyond that. Our high school was just starting a softball program in the 80's.

It only stands to reason as time goes on and more opportunities open up people will discover it and want to take part.

I remember when my daughter was seven my wife signed her up to play and at the time I thought it was cute but didn't get too excited. Then she made all-stars and we went to our first tournament and got our clocks cleaned. I was forever changed.

We are not a new organization by any means but this is the first time I have run a tournament, The Warm-Up in The Danger Zone Tournament, and I think it is actually one of the best tournaments listed as far as teams signed up goes in the 12u and 14u age brackets. Thanks to a lot of help from friends and parents this is going to be fun and great for others to come watch. I believe the teams in this tourney has set the bar high and it will become a premier warm-up tourney every year. Thank you to the teams coming. I am looking forward to this and I believe you all are as well.

Good Luck on your tournament. And pray for no rain. I ran one once and it rained hard Friday night. It just messed everything up. some people are so unforgiving of the weather.

Thanks woolfman. If it rains all we can do is adjust the schedule or call it off depending on the amount we get. Let everybody pray for no rain.

I am coaching my dd's 10U travel team. Coach and player are new to travel ball this year. 2010 we did County Ball and end of season Rec/Allstar Tournaments. Being from Gilead, my dd has been influenced by Cam, Raygen & Clare. Seriously, can my dd have better softball rolemodels to look up to? We are Marion Diamonds but we love to support the locals.

I returned to coaching after many years away due to girls not having the opportunity to play at the tournament levels. Five years ago I jumped back into it when my daughters area friends, some with good talent were turned away due to not enough teams. The need was present and many inspired girls that were watching TeamUSA the ESPN and BigTen Network.

I have a Independent team that now has been offering the players the same experience as those big name teams do in the amount of game time and tournaments....Its tough coaching this way but it keeps the sport growing! We have girls advancing into many of the big organizations that may have never stayed in the sport. We believe it is a positive effort hard but positive. I am very happy to see more playing and not in rec ball with all those modified rules.

If it wasn't for the local tournaments and the other organizations how would a little girl progress into a solid player? Not all players out there are born Lasers.

My DD's rec team played local tournaments which lead to the desire for private instruction. That lead to finding a local travel team, which lead to a higher level travel team. Now the desire for a higher yet level is there and the work continues. She is not a natural Stud. She works hard to become a better player. You can't jump to the top of a mountain. It's usually a long climb with a few slips along the way.

As for the elitist's who think that all others are beneath them and should just give up. You are not the highest level out there.:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

There is always a higher level team unless you a fielding a top 5 ASA National team every year. JMHO

Laser 00 I feel somewhat obligated to respond to your post since I see you viewed my profile and I am one of the 1st year teams looking for players and we are playing local tournaments only

1st let me say I have no children (no Daddy ball here) and I am a board member of our local rec. league

As much as I hate to say it there are not many rec. leagues left in our area and the ones that are left are barely hanging on. This year our league will be lucky to have 5 10u teams 2 12u teams and 1 14u team we are reaching out to other leagues in the area that are in the same boat just so we can play 10 or 12 games this year. Our numbers continue to fall off after 10u. Two years ago we sent a 10u team to the rec. league WS in Chillicothe and won the whole thing of the 12 players from that team only 1 still plays in the rec. league.

The goal of Rockstars softball is and always will be to have a group of 10 to 12 coachable girls with good families who want a little more challenge then they get from playing rec. league, at an affordable cost to the families. By playing in local tournaments we can control costs and still be challenged. Right now we have 11 players from 5 schools and 4 counties Muskingum, Licking, Perry and Morgan and many of them could not play if we were traveling every weekend but I will admit it?s a balancing act I know some of the parents my want more exposure for there dd someday and we might lose them trust me I think about this everyday but if we raise the out of pocket cost to the parents (hotels / Gas) we will lose more of them.

The way we are doing things we may just be a watered down travel team that should be playing rec. ball and we may never beat a big org. or even get a chance to play one, but we are giving 10 or 12 girls and chance to run bases every weekend instead of running the streets and if that is wrong I dont want to be right!

Just keep working hard to provide a place to play. I would think what you're doing is providing a path to keep girls in the game, and opening vistas for them to see how far they want to go. You're doing a great job!

Keep fighting the good fight rockstars1. What really annoys me is that there seems to be a mentality of "no one else can play in my sandbox" in certain circles here. Elitism maybe? Maybe not. I think a lot of people are just threatened by more competition. But that's just my arrogant opinion.
