Re: How many HS teammates can play on the same tra

10-3-4 A member of an interscholastic squad in a team sport sponsored by the Board of Education or other governing board may participate in non-interscholastic contests, tryouts, training or
practices prior to, and after, the school?s interscholastic season under the following conditions:

a) The number of interscholastic squad members from the same school on the non-interscholastic squad is limited to a maximum of 50% of the members of a team as defined in the playing rules of the sport.

From June 1 through July 31 this restriction is not in effect.

The 50% limitation is defined as follows for all OHSAA recognized team sports. 50% Limitation on
Sport number of squad members:
Baseball 4
Basketball 2
Field Hockey 5
Football 5
Ice Hockey 3
Soccer 5
Softball 4
Volleyball 3

b) An interscholastic squad member may continue participation with a non-interscholastic squad in a national qualifying tournament after July 31 until the squad is eliminated from the national qualifying tournament but no later than Labor Day.

c) Graduating seniors who are participating on a non-interscholastic squad after their final interscholastic contest in a season in the same sport are exempt from this limitation.

Re: How many HS teammates can play on the same tra

I open this post in thinking that the 50% rule is an Ohio thing, coming out of OHSAA.

Does anyone see a problem if a non-interscholastic team roster includes:
? no more than 50% (i.e., 4 or less in fastpitch) are from the same school in Ohio, but,
? more than 50% (e.g., 5 or more on a fastpitch team) of the team attend the same Pennsylvania school ?

(Pennsylvania?s PIAA (the counter organization to OHSAA) does not have a 50% rule).

I think this would be OK, reasoning:
? Thing to be avoided is that team composition cannot compromise the high school eligibility of a student athlete who attends an Ohio school;
? The 50% rule only applies to students of Ohio schools;
? Pennsylvania does not levy such restrictions.

Any other thoughts out there?

I'd have to agree that the OHSAA has no authority over PA student athletes....

You can have your entire team play together from June 1st to July 31 and into August if the qualify for a national tournament. If members of the h.s. coaching staff are the coaches then you can only be together 10 days total. This is the way I understand the rule!

Buckeye is correct, the 50% rule only applies if a member of the HS coaching staff is coaching the team beyond the 10 days allowed.

Don't understand the question..the restrictions are on summer teams not HS teams during the HS season.

Depends on which travel ball subteam (that is, numbers of travel ball team members who played for the same high school) the coach participated with during high school season. If he was assistant coach to the hs team that placed six of its members on the travel team, more that 10 contact with the travel team would violate OHSAA rules. In contrast, if in hs he was coaching the 4 members from his hs team, he does not have to keep track of his contacts with the ttravel eam. And remember that if you are in the situation of counting contacts, these rules require aggregation of contact if someone else on the HS coaching staff is incurring contacts that are limited to 10.

I think I got this right. BUT if this ever comes up in the context of indoor leagues and high school teams, post your question again, as the analysis is different. / :eek:/
