Does anyone know about the rule or if there are any on how many girls can you have from one community on a travel team if the number and at what age group does that effect.

As many as you like. Once they get to high school the OHSAA has rules about the number of girls who can play together, but that doesn't include summer ball.

Just have to be aware that there are applicable dates that must be observed......Ohio is usually June 1 -July 31 but an allowance is made past July 31 for your respective National Tourney.

I think I am right by saying you can have only four girls from the same High School on a team.

This is true from August 1st - June 1st.... concerning no more than four ( season can extend if you go to Nationals )

From June 1st to August 1.. any amount is fine

You can have as many as you want from a high school team on a summer team in the specific dates mentioned. You can only have 4 players if the High School coach or any assistant High School coach coaches the summer team.

You can have as many as you want even with the school coaches from 6/1 - 8/1 if the coaches don't exceed 10 days of coaching during that time.

For example: a school team, or a community rec. team can go play in let's say three weekend tournaments of three days each and be coached by the school coaches and not be in any violation.

Also if it is lower age divisions which include middle school players there is no restriction unless the players played on a school sponsored OHSAA team in the spring. If the middle school kids play on a Parks and Rec team the OHSAA do not apply.

This is true, but remember if the team has a practice durning the week, it counts as one of the 10 days, even if only 2 girls come to practice.

There is no limit on girls from the same community on a travel team. Only High School ball players on a team have restrictions..

PARMA,
If it is an OHSAA sanctioned middle school, they are affected as well if they play Fall ball. The four per school pertains to them as well as it would any HS...

But, what if not all of them play school ball at the school.
Hypothetically, Let's say you have 7 from the same school... 4 play school ball and 3 run track in the spring... what then?

you would be ok as only 4 players played softball, the other 3 did not play softball and therefore were not members of the school ball team.

I think that the biggest mistake any JH team can do... is be school sponsored. Look at the amount of girls it can affect and once OHSAA has their clutches on this age group of girls.. there is no going back on the amount of regulations they can throw at you.

Love to see Junior High teams in spring of 2011... be "club" teams and not school sponsored and Ohio won't have this problem.

I don't think so.... Hypothetically, lets say they say now they are running track, two change their mind and play Softball, hence you are in deep do do. That's why it's four from a school regardless if they have played or not as incoming Freshman. Why risk it??

Once 8 years ago I heard directly from OHSAA I had to ask two to step down and not play fall ball so we wouldn't be over the limit. That was the worst thing I had to do after we were going to be all set. Luckily two volunteered to step down and work that fall.

So unless something's drastically changed with the rules, be careful on your decisions

No way. They are not members of the school team until they play in a Scrimmage, Preview or Game. The rules specifically state that. The rules have never said 4 girls from the same school,.

4.2) A member of an interscholastic softball squad (any student who has played in a
scrimmage, preview or regular season/tournament game as a substitute or starter)
sponsored by the Board of Education or other governing board may participate in
non-interscholastic softball prior to and after the school season under the following
conditions:
4.21) The number of interscholastic softball players from the same school on a noninterscholastic
squad is limited to four on the roster of that non-interscholastic
squad. A roster is defined as all the members of the entire squad on that noninterscholastic
squad.

If a Middle School is sponsored by the Board and they played Middle school ball, they are sponsored by the board as soon as they stepped on the middle school field, which carries into HS. No where in 4.2 does it state HS scrimmage, preview or game.

If I hadn't heard it from them over the phone, I woudn't even talk about it.

Those that want to chance it go ahead... I believe you can only get in trouble if you report yourself anyway.... Again, why would you even risk it?

Hilliard,

You are exactly correct. If the middle school program is school and ohsaa sanctioned the rules kick in. If the middle school is a club or rec team they do not fall under that jurisdiction.

That's always been my question to the coaches of the middle school teams.

Why in the world would you take that chance in ruining a girl's eligibility and run a school sponsored program in the first place. Absolutely crazy.

Secondly, a lot of travel coaches are worried about the money they spent in the winter on clinics, etc... and then have their org girls playing JH ball.. where in some ( not all) the pitcher is slow and thus throwing the batters timing off so bad.. that by the time they start playing travel ball once again in late Spring.. the girls is out of the loop based on the competition of the pitcher's she face in Middle School ball.

Makes no sense to me and it seems it is making no sense to some of the travel ball coaches either from what I hear from them.

Sorry. Not buying that stuff:)

If they follow the rules why would there be ANY risk?

A couple of practices will take care of the timing issue.
