This comes from a good friend of mine....
With the high school season in full go right now and the first games right around the corner, BOY AM I STARTING TO HEAR IT!!! From how stupid the coaches are from the players side, to how unprepared the players are from the coaches side, to how time consuming the game is from the parents side, I GET IT ALL!!! Well here are some quick tips on problems and solutions to help all of you COPE WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL SEASON!!!
They keep changing the practice time! Get over it, it is going to happen. With the weather changing as quickly as it does, with schools having basketball and wrestling teams still in the playoffs, events in the gyms and whatever else happens, schedules will get changed and almost without notice. Make sure that you have a flexible schedule, all of you!!! Coaches, parents and players, it is a must.
The changing schedule interferes with my job! Yep, that's right and if you do want to play high school ball, then either find an employer who will be flexible with your hours or, give it up. Employers a quick point here: "I feel that the most reliable young people out there are those who are involved, give them a chance and you will be rewarded"
I can't believe I made JV and she made Varsity! Yep, that's right and ..it is what it is. Harsh words but true. Only one person can make that choice, YOUR COACH. Only one person can change their mind, that is YOU! Whether it's in practice, in a varsity/jv scrimmage, in jv games or in varsity games when you do get brought up, you will have a chance to show that you are deserving! When that time comes then YOU HAVE TO PERFORM!!! If you can't show it then, then the coach made the right decision.
My daughter has played shortstop all her life and they have her in centerfield, I can't believe how stupid those coaches are. Again, only one person can make that decision and that is THE COACH! Parents, one of the worse things you can do is to cut down the coaching staff (even if they might need it) in front of your daughters. Let them learn how to be a part of a team, how to handle decisions that they might not agree with. It can be a good lesson in life. And a good point for all parents is: unless they do something that is illegal or immoral, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET THE COACHING CHANGED THIS SEASON, SO LIVE WITH IT.
My coaches won't let me throw all my pitches! Yep, it is what it is! Again, only the COACH can make that decision. I firmly believe that there is no democracy in a TEAM. You need one person to call the shots and that one person should be THE COACH!! They can't be asking all your parents or all your fans or all your teammates what they should do, so live with it!! Besides that, even at the college level we only allow our pitchers to throw their best pitches which is usually only 3.
My coach doesn't give me the opportunity to practice pitching, even though they know I pitch! This one I side with the players! Coaches, you may have several pitchers on your team who are not going to pitch for your high school team. However, what harm is there in giving them practice time to keep their skills up for the summer, or maybe even for you if something happens to your chosen staff?
High school softball is nothing like tournament ball! Yep, that's right! High school softball allows you to play with your friends in a competitive environment against schools in your area with the possibility of winning a state championship. WHAT A GREAT THING!!! Tournament ball allows you to pick a team, a coach and players you want to play with and go against the best competition in the state and surrounding states with a change at winning a National Championship. WHAT A GREAT THING!!!
HAVE A GREAT SEASON!!!
